Getting a new mattress is not a cheap investment that’s why it is a wise move to look for ways on how to extend its lifespan. Aside from the type of material it is made of, the way you care and maintain it has a great effect on how long it will last. Although you can’t keep a mattress forever, there are ways you can do to keep it at its best shape through the years. Here’s how you can do it.

Use A Mattress Protector and Topper

A mattress topper is another layer that is placed on top of the mattress itself. It provides additional support and cushioning while preventing fluids and other substances from getting into the mattress itself. It is best used with a mattress protector, which is a fitted sheet that covers both the topper and mattress itself.

Generally, mattress protectors are waterproof to avoid fluids, body oil and other moisture from absorbing into the cushion. It also serves as a covering to protect the cushion from dust, dirt and other allergens. Be sure to get a protector that is well fitted to your mattress so it doesn’t move under the sheets as you lie down on it.

Ensure Proper Support on The Mattress

No matter what kind of material your mattress is made from, it will get worn out easily if it is not properly supported underneath. A solid platform is important to give proper and good support on a mattress, making it wear evenly like how it was intended to be.

Avoid Jumping on The Bed

Jumping on the bed sounds fun but it actually shortens the life span of your mattress and even the bed itself. Bouncing on the bed creates unnecessary pressure on the mattress, the platform and even the bed framing itself. They are not made to withstand this kind of pressure that’s why they could get damaged through time if it is done frequently. Whether a child or an adult, avoid jumping on the bed as much as possible to make the bed and the mattress last longer than its average lifespan.

Regular Flipping and Rotating of Mattress

While most of the newer mattresses work well without being rotated or flipped, there are other models that still need this to keep it in good shape. Usually when you sleep on the same part every night, that area wears down faster than the other parts. You can flip or rotate the mattress every season change to make it easier to remember.

Clean Regularly

Vacuuming the mattress at least twice a year is important to keep it free from dirt, dust and other allergens. Also, be sure to address stains immediately when you notice them to prevent them from becoming permanent. You can use lemon juice and salt to spot-treat stains on the mattress. For older marks, try using a mixture of baking soda, dish soap, and hydrogen peroxide. Spray it on the surface and blot away with a soft, clean rag.

With a little effort and extra care, you can definitely make your mattress last longer than its average lifespan.
