The students hoping to get admission in top educational institutions in the United States have to score well during the SAT or ACT entrance exams. Earlier students used to appear for SAT, Scholastic Assessment Test, or ACT, American College Testing. The recent times have seen a rise in the number of students appearing for both SAT and ACT.

Both SAT and ACT follow different exam patterns. SAT focuses on testing the student’s problem-solving capabilities and critical thinking. Whereas, ACT assesses a student’s general understanding of the subject and his/her capability to adapt to college curriculum. The differences in exam pattern necessitate the candidate to prepare in a well-planned manner. Hard work along with smart work only can take you to the aisle of success.

It is always better to start SAT preparations at the earliest. Thereby, you will be on the track, by the time exam date. SAT exams require practice and preparation. The more you prepare, the more you are ready for the battle. Elite universities have fewer seats. And it is well-known that last-minute preparation cannot get you into the university of your choice.

As you know, Math questions in SAT and ACT follow their own format and style of questions. Let us have a look at both.

SAT Math

SAT will have Math questions from Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry, Data Analysis and Trigonometry. The questions are divided into two sections. The first section, wherein the student will not be allowed to use a calculator and the second calculator-based section.

You will have to undergo the test without using a calculator in the first section. There will be comparatively less complicated calculations in the subject section. This section will contain 20 questions and the student is given 25 minutes to attend the same.

The second calculator-based section consists of 38 questions. And the time duration for the section is 55 minutes. This section has complicated questions. And that necessitates the usage of a calculator.

In total, SAT Math has 58 questions, which has to be completed in 80 minutes.

ACT Math

ACT Math consists of 60 questions and the time duration for the same is 60 minutes. The students are allowed to use a calculator for the whole section. ACT Math is aimed at evaluating a student’s skill level. To estimate his or her capability in handling college level Math.

ACT Math will have questions from Algebra (both Elementary and Intermediate), Geometry, Trigonometry, Probability and Statistics.

How a math tutor help your kids reach their SAT & ACT goals

As we have seen, both the SAT and ACT follow different patterns of questions. It is not easy for a student/ kid alone to prepare and perform well during the exam. The number of students appearing for the SAT and ACT entrance exams is increasing every year. And an inadequately prepared child cannot expect admission in any good university in the US.

In addition to the tight competition due to the high number of students attending the exam. There are other things too that scare the kids. The thought about the vast syllabus and numerous practice tests itself can tense the student. Further, the anxiety of parents can seep into the kid, making him or her more nervous. All this may cascade to reach the most undesired result, failure.

An experienced tutor with a systematic approach can be of great help to the student. He or she can take the burden off the student. Even though the teacher will not reduce the mock tests, practice sessions, classes etc. He or she will be able to balance it in such a manner that the child will not turn tense. A calm, composed and confident mind is the foundation to success.

A successful teacher would be able to impart the coaching focusing on the following.

Improving Confidence – A student must be aware of his or her capabilities. The kid must be instilled with the thought that if one can believe he/ she can achieve. The self-confidence will act as the foundation.

Identifying the Weak Areas – Boosting a student’s self-confidence doesn’t mean to give a blind eye to the kid’s weaknesses. Forcing on those areas to ensure improvement can bring negative results. The tutor must be able to recognise it and prepare the coaching accordingly. So that the child improves on them in an organic way.

Strategizing the Answering – A tutor can formulate the right strategy for the student. It will be prepared based on the student’s capabilities and weaknesses. Therefore, the strategy for a particular kid may not suit the other. The target is to attend the maximum number of questions successfully. Only a tutor with adequate experience can prepare the right strategy and get the kid to follow that through constant preparations.

Practising to Perfection – Live classes, mock tests and practise sessions are the basics of every coaching class. This will elevate a student’s knowledge level. Frequent feedback on the students’ performance during mock tests and practise sessions can aid him or her in understanding their abilities and weaknesses. A tutor would be able to guide the student to the right track, according to their performance during classes and tests.
