Handicrafts are often notable for their uniqueness since they were made by hand. They are a reflection of the culture and tradition of the people who created them. Their beauty and quality may depend on aesthetic principles and subsequent hard work. Indian handicrafts can range from batik to wood carving, lacquer wood, handmade textiles, and Takashi (metal inlay in wood). Here are an overview of those crafts and how or where they were made:
Batik: The method of making colorful designs on clothes by dyeing is known as batik. The word is derived from ‘tick’, and is young for ‘dot to dot’, and when batik originated in Java, Indonesia, it easily became a part of Indian handicraft. Some of the best batik printers in India are from Bhairavgarh, a small town on the banks of the river Kshipra. The craftsmen of Rajasthan and Gujarat arrived there about 400 years ago when the Mughals ruled. The method they use for dyeing is similar to the traditional method used in Indonesia, where parts of the fabric are covered with wax to prevent the dye from affecting their areas. No batik pattern is the same, so each product is considered one of a kind.
Peetalnagri: A special type of Indian handicraft made with brass is called ‘Peetalnagri’, which is named Peetal Nagri or ‘City of Brass’. It is an ancient art form of brass utensils that have been easily attained nationally and internationally, especially by the British and Mughals. It is notable for its intricate Persian patterns and development and adornment processes, which make every product unique. Contemporary artisans have started experimenting with new metals.
Uttarkashi: Known as ‘the art of inlaying brass metal wires into wood’, this Indian handicraft is practiced in Uttar Pradesh where wood carving and wood roots are common. The work of carving in this area was started by Kashmiri artisans who came in the 1860s. Some early products with Tarakashi are wooden slippers, which the pious Hindus wear. Inning and engraving were once done by the same craftsmen, but these days, both are already considered special skills.
Wood chipping: Products made of wood are decorated in bright and vibrant colors to enhance their beauty. Recently, Indian handicrafts, including wooden sticks, have become popular with international customers. It is considered a geographical indication by the World Trade Organization. Also, various handicraft products include wooden handcrafted home decor, lighting, and textiles such as sarees and dress materials.
