Properties:

A greyish-silver shiny metal is pure tungsten. The purest form of tungsten is quite pliant which can be processed easily. However, pure tungsten contains little amount of oxygen and carbon. These provide the tungsten metal considerable brittleness and hardness. This metal occurs in a natural state in a chemical compound form with different elements. Pure tungsten has properties to combine with other metals like nickel, iron, and copper to form the strongest alloy. The tungsten alloy is strong and has the highest melting point. They form several strong things like tungsten ball, tungsten carbide, tungsten rings, tungsten sheets which are used in various industries. There are more than 20 bearing minerals of tungsten, in which two have a significant role in industries, namely scheelite, and wolframite.

  • Pure tungsten with a density of 19.25 g/cm3 is the heaviest engineering metal.
  • It has 3410∞C the highest melting point.
  • Among all metals, tungsten has the lowest vapor pressure.
  • The highest modulus of metal elasticity.
  • The hardest pure metal.
  • Tremendous high-temperature strength.
  • At temperatures above 1650∞C, the highest tensile strength.
  • Co-efficient is a low thermal expansion that is similar to borosilicate glass.
  • No protection is need from oxidation at the elevated temperature.
  • The resistance of corrosion is excellent, the hydrofluoric, nitric or sulphuric acid solutions cannot attack.
  • Environmental friendly
  • Decomposition is impossible.

Uses:

Tungsten alloy and tungsten compounds due to the unique properties of tungsten, the metals cannot substitute in many applications in different modern technology fields. They are used in several materials: such as mobile phone handsets, automotive parts, drilling, electrical & electronics appliances, logging equipment, chemical applications, aerospace components, and many more uses. Nowadays, tungsten is majorly used in cemented carbide manufacturing and hard metal manufacturing. The tungsten carbide is becoming very common as its strength and hardness are close to diamond. It is denser as compared to titanium and steel. When you compare it with any steel grade, tungsten carbide is twice in hardness. They have high wear resistance.

Tungsten products are widely used in metalworking applications and mining and construction work due to its properties and characteristics. The usage of global mining of tungsten carbide as cutting tools, boring and drilling, propel the market growth of the tungsten. The products of pure tungsten metal are used widely in electronic industries as well. They are used in electrical and electronic contacts, wires, lighting filaments, electrodes, rods, sheets, etc. pure tungsten has great demand in the aerospace industry and tanning industries.
