California-based bicycle company Rungu has launched a pedal-assist version of its three-wheeled “fat bike. Equipped with large, soft tires – two of which are located on the front – the MDV electric monster gives riders control over rough surfaces.

Rungu’s electric MDV juggler uses a 1,000-watt Bafang M610 medium-drive unit and features throttle and pedal-assist modes. It is powered by a 52v/15ah battery mounted in an exhaust pipe, which provides approximately 85 km in pedal-assist mode, or 29 km when using the accelerator.

The MDV is made with a 6061-t6 aluminum frame with 60mm double wishbone suspension forks. Power is transmitted through a Shimano deore 11-36t 10-speed drive train to 26 x 4.8-inch tires. 180mm tektro hydraulic disc brakes are present on all three wheels.

a handlebar-mounted color LCD display allows riders to check necessary statistics, including speed and battery level. it also allows them to select the amount of electric pedal assist.

Rungu’s electric monster began as a solution to a local problem: “What’s the best way to transport equipment across the beach to the ocean,” Rungu explains.

“Carrying surfing or fishing equipment across the beach in San Onofre State is a task for surfers and fishermen. Four-wheelers are not allowed on the beach, and the nearest parking lot is two miles away. To get to the ocean, surfers can follow the dirt roads of the state park by bike or cross the beach on foot. Bicycles do not operate on soft sand, and quads are not allowed within 50 miles of the beach.

The bicycle weighs about 100 pounds, aided by the fact that it does not use a hub motor. This keeps the weight more balanced and offers a maximum speed of 35 km/h.
