US President Joe Biden stated that Afghans “must decide for themselves” when Afghan President Ashraf Ghani visited the White House.
Mr Biden pledged the country’s continued support, even though US and NATO soldiers would conclude their withdrawal on 11 September.
It comes following the capture in a recent offensive of dozens of districts by Islamist Taliban soldiers.
The UN was alarmed by its gains earlier this week.
The conference came on the day after the US announced plans to evacuate thousands of Afghans who had been working for the US military before retirement. A lot of the Taliban’s fear reprisals.
Recently, US and NATO officials have said that the Taliban have so far failed to live up to commitments in Afghanistan to reduce violence.
Mr. Biden said the partnership between the United States and Afghanistan would continue, speaking in the Oval Office on Friday.
“Maybe our troops leave, but Afghanistan support doesn’t end,” he said.
But he emphasized it was Afghans who had to decide “”That which they want,” he added: “It must stop the senseless violence. It’s going to be very hard.”
Mr. Ghani said he supported the “historical” decision by Joe Biden of retiring American troops, saying that he would “respect and support it.” He said it was there.
He also announced the recapture of six districts by Afghan security forces and that some recent Taliban gains have been reversed.
