Saul Cabelo Alvarez was born on July 18, 1990 in San Agustin, Tlajomulco de Zuniga, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

Family

Son of Santos Álvarez Barragán and Ana María Barragán Fernández. He has 7 siblings: Rigoberto, Ana Elda, Daniel Giovanni, José Ricardo, Gonzalo, Víctor Alfonso and Juan Ramón. All male siblings, of which Saul is the youngest, practiced boxing.

Studies

When he was 5 years old, the family traveled to Juanacatlan. From then on he worked with his father making popsicles. He did not like to attend school and in high school he used to skip classes.

Boxer

His older brother, Rigoberto, was his first instructor and gave him his first gloves when he was 10 years old. He started boxing at the age of 13 after attending the professional debut of his older brother Rigoberto Alvarez.

Canelo

The alias “Canelo” was given to him by his agent Jose “Chepo” Reynoso because of the reddish color of his hair. At the age of 16 he began to have problems with alcoholism after his parents’ divorce, a phase that lasted until he was 18 years old.

First triumphs

In 2004, he won the silver medal at the National Youth Championship in Sinaloa. Then he won the gold medal in the 2005 Junior Olympics, held in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. In his amateur phase he achieved a record of 44 victories (12 by KO) and suffered 2 defeats.

Professional

He made his professional debut on October 29, 2005, at the Chololo Larios Arena in Tonalá, Jalisco, at the age of 15 years and 3 months, facing Abraham González, whom he defeated by technical knockout.

On August 2, 2008, he received the Welterweight title from Fedecentro (Latin American Federation of Professional Boxing Commissions), identified by the World Boxing Association (WBA), after defeating Carlos Adán Jerez.

On February 21, 2009, he knocked out Dominican Euri Gonzalez in Zapopan, Jalisco, winning the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Latin Welterweight title.

Champion of the whole world

On March 5, 2011, he defeated Matthew Hatton to win the WBC super welterweight belt in a fight held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, becoming the sixth youngest Mexican boxer to be crowned champion of the world.

On September 18, 2011, he fought against Alfonso Gómez, whom he defeated in the sixth round by technical knockout. On May 5, 2012, he faced Shane Mosley, whom he defeated and retained the title. Canelo won since the third round, being able to knock down Trout, who lost for the first time in his career.

Floyd Mayweather Jr

After defeating “Perro” Angulo, on July 12, 2014, he fought against Cuban Erislandy Lara, in a non-title fight at an agreed weight of 155 pounds, winning with a split decision.

He fought Liam Smith in a fairly closely contested showdown on September 17, 2016. In the seventh round, Canelo connected with a left uppercut to the chin and a right hook to the temple causing Smith’s first knockdown of his entire career, even when Smith got in and continued the fight. In the ninth round, he knocked Smith down with a hook to the liver and the referee stopped the fight, proclaiming him the new WBO super welterweight champion at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

All-World Middleweight Champion

He has been declared WBC all-world middleweight champion on November 21, 2015, after defeating Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto by aspects and unanimous decision.

After this clash Alvarez has a record of 47 wins (33 previously the limit), one loss (to Floyd Mayweather Jr.) and one knockout.

On May 6, 2017, in a brawl that ended with boos, Saul won without complexity and right there, in the ring, it was announced his fight against Kazakhstan’s Gennady Golovkin for September 16.

In the end, the two fighters faced each other in an even match, where the Mexican was better in the first 3 rounds, and the Kazakh in the next ones. The judges declared a draw being the result quite criticized by the specialized press in which one section gave the winner to the Kazakh and the other to the Mexican.

Clenbuterol

In March 2018, he granted positive for clenbuterol for which the Nevada athletic commission withdrew his boxing license along 6 months.

Middleweight world champion

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez defeated Gennady Golovkin by split judges’ choice in one of the most anticipated bouts of the year. The bout took place at the T-Mobile in Las Vegas, where the two have had close rounds and, even when firng that Golovkin drew virtue, Canelo’s insistence prevailed after twelve rounds.

On Saturday, May 4, 2019, Canelo Álvarez won a resounding victory over New York’s Daniel Jacobs in Las Vegas, where the Mexican united the middleweight titles after a unanimous decision success. Overall, ‘Canelo’ earned $36 million from the bout.

Title loss

After the Mexican won the middleweight world championship belts of the World Federation (IBF), the World Association (WBA) and the World Council (WBC), almost 4 months later, the IBF stripped the Mexican of his title, after failing to reach an economic agreement with the Ukrainian Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Robert Diaz, on behalf of Golden Boy Promotions, agreed that Saul Alvarez would relinquish the IBF middleweight world title if there was no full pact between him and Derevyanchenko prior to the agreed date of July 29, 2019.

Highest paid boxer

Apparently, this platform had given its nod to the showdown against Derevyanchenko, even though Alvarez would forgo 4.5 of the expected €27 million.

On May 4, 2019, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Alvarez defended his WBC, WBA, The Ring and lineal championship belts against IBF champion Daniel Jacobs in a middleweight unification bout.

On November 2, 2019 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Canelo Alvarez defeated Sergey Kovalev in round 11 to become a 4-division champion.

Number 1 pound for pound

In November 2019 he has been identified as number 1 pound-for-pound fighter worldwide by The Ring magazine.

He was proclaimed super middleweight super champion (WBC and WBA) on December 19, 2020 after defeating Callum Smith by unanimous decision. Canelo Alvarez has become the best pound-for-pound boxer with this success.

Family life

With his girlfriend Fernanda Gomez he had his third daughter, Maria Fernanda, born once they were separated and as she was pregnant he had an interaction with Shannon de Lima, ex-wife of vocalist Marc Anthony.

His son Saul Adiel Alvarez was born 9 months after the birth of Maria Fernanda, the result of his short interaction with businesswoman Nelda Sepulveda.
