If you asked the man in the street to name a supercar odds on are the first name they would come up with would be Ferrari. Ferrari is one of the most evocative names in the motoring world. Founded back in 1939 by Enzo Ferrari the company built its first car a year later in 1940.

Originally producing cars for motorsport it branched out into the production of road cars in 1947. Since then its reputation has grown from that of a respected racing team to one of a company that creates automotive legends. While Ferraris may be out of many peoples price bracket (in fact for some people even the cost of Ferrari servicing might seem extortionate) it is always nice to dream. So, whether you fancy buying a Ferrari or just like admiring them we’ve compiled a list of five of the most iconic models ever built.

The Ferrari 250 GTO

Probably the holy grail of the motoring world, there is no other car ever made that has as much charisma and admiration as the Ferrari 250GTO. If you don’t believe that then check out the prices they sell for at auctions. There were only 39 of these cars ever built which makes them not only extremely rare but also very desirable. Buyers of the original cars were personally vetted by Enzo Ferrari himself to ensure suitability to own the car. This exclusivity is one of the main reasons why the Ferrari 250 GTO has been named as the worlds most expensive car.

The Ferrari F40

Built as a celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary the F40 was the last ever vehicle to receive a seal of approval from Enzo Ferrari before he passed away. This model was sold for five years from 1987 to 1992 and was a no-nonsense race car for use on the road. As a result, the F40 has gone down in history as one of the greatest supercars of all time. Originally the plan was to build only 400 of these however, over 1300 left the factory during the five years of production. If you are thinking you fancy one of these it’s likely to cost you north of £1 million.

Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder SWB

Originally offered to the public in 1957 in LWB format the 250 GT California Spyder was designer Scaglietti’s take on an open-top 250 GT. By reducing the length of the wheelbase he was able to give this model greater handling capabilities making for a more dynamic driving experience. As its name suggests this model was designed for the US market it’s legend was further enhanced by its starring role in the 1986 film ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ‘. The Ferrari 250 line has undoubtedly gained a place in the annals of automotive history borne out by the extortionate prices they go for at auction where they routinely go for more than 15 million dollars.

Ferrari Testarossa

There is an entire generation of car enthusiasts whose bedroom walls were adorned by posters of the Ferrari Testarossa. The Testarossa is one of the cheaper Ferraris to buy mainly because of its 1980s styling and the fact that over 10,000 were produced. However, the fact that so many were produced only highlights the popularity of the model. Despite its popularity, the Testarossa was largely under appreciated for many years. Mainly because it was a pain to work on and the fact that the F40 was faster and rarer. However, it became a cultural icon after its appearance in seasons three to five of Miami Vice and taking a starring role in the arcade game Outrun.

Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

Ferraris first-ever supercar the 365GTB/4 Daytona was a 170mph GT that was the fastest production car of its day by a long way. Certain tests put its top speed at 176mph while it could go from 0-100mph in just 12.4 seconds. Widely considered one of the most loved Ferraris ever the Daytona has become more desirable over the years. The Daytona tag came as a result of Ferraris 1-2-3 in the 1967 Daytona 24 hour race. This famous Pininfarina design was different from anything Ferrari had built before. The adoption of an angular design accurately previewed the style of the 1970s. There were only 1,406 Ferrari 365GT/4s ever built and as such it has now become a high-value item among Ferrari enthusiasts and collectors.

Everyone will have their own favourite Ferrari however the five we have chosen are our particular ones and ones which demonstrate why the brand has produced some of the most iconic cars of all time.
