Online learning is no longer a not-so-practical approach, especially for schools and educational institutions that are utilising the technology optimally to ensure learning doesn’t suffer. But, we all do agree that distance learning has terribly failed at removing the feeling of being distant from the teachers. Don’t lose hope because there are ways teachers can try to minimise the distance between them and kids through distance learning.

1. Connect with students
Many students, especially the little ones might not have even met their classroom teachers in-person because it’s going to be one year that pandemic brought everything to a standstill. But, teachers can reduce the gap by connecting with students, especially those who do not participate in online classes. In such a case, teachers should have a short conversation before or after the class with these students. This approach might improve the behaviour of students as they would feel more connected to the teacher.

2. Try to implement activity based learning
Activity based learning for kindergarten students is something that most teachers aren’t paying attention to. Instead of having long story reading and quiz sessions, teachers can plan some activities that impart learning in kids. Celebrate festivals together, create puppets, and do colouring activities to explain a concept to the small kids.

3. Sound energetic in class
Not all the students are active and highly-responding during class. While some of them might be straight out of bed to attend the class, others may be more engaged in planning their brunch or lunch menus. A loud voice in such cases could be just the right thing to bring the sleepy and lost heads back in senses.

4. Try to make every child speak
A teachers knows the art of how to make a student speak. Make sure every student in the class speaks and interacts during sessions. Teachers can have rapid question rounds, quizzes, and other activities to make every child speak.

5. Praise every child
Paying individual attention to students is more important in the time of pandemic. There’s a possibility that a children who speaks less might feel left out, even after they have done well in test or any other activity. It is the responsibility of a teacher to praise every child, when they achieve something.

Many education solution providers in India are coming up with tools and programmes to encourage two-way learning and communication in online classes. This way, teachers will get a chance to build rapport with children and get their interest in studies.
