The clinical use of PRP to accelerate and promote healing has been a tradition. PRP, a blood component that contains special proteins that help blood clot and support cell growth functions, is used in clinical settings. PRP can be used in many clinical settings, including orthopedic surgery and microneedling to treat acne scars. PRP is a technique that injects PRP into the damaged tissue (unhealthy hair follicles) to restore and rejuvenate cells.

Hair Loss Treatment with PRP Injections

Hair loss treatments using PRP are done in the office. The patient needs to be minimally prepared. To reduce discomfort, a topical numbing lotion is applied to the scalp approximately half an hour before the treatment. To prepare the PRP solution, your medical provider will take some of your blood. The centrifuge is used to spin down your blood in a special tube for PRP extraction. The PRP solution is taken from your blood. Small amounts of PRP are then injected into the scalp to treat hair loss.

It is recommended to have 4-6 sessions spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. As soon as the initial treatment is complete, hair texture, thickness, growth, and new hair follicles can begin. Before evaluating the final results, we recommend patients wait at least 3 months after the initial treatment.

Preparation for hair loss treatment with PRP injections

2 Weeks before Injections

Please follow our dietary restrictions

Avoid nuts, seeds, and fish for 2 weeks prior to your appointment. This will help reduce swelling, bleeding, and bruising after injections. Before you get injected, please read our Guidelines on Foods & Medications to Avoid.

Arnica Supplements

Arnica supplements can be started a week before injections to reduce bruises. Arnica can speed up the healing of bruises. You can find arnica supplements in almost all health supplement aisles at your local Whole Foods or GMC, CVS, and also purchased from The Naderi Center.

Supplements and Stopping Medications

Talk to your doctor specialist or primary care physician. You may need to discontinue blood thinners a few days or weeks before your injection treatment. Talk to your doctor to determine if you are safe to stop taking these medications. Also, ask for instructions on when to stop or restart your medication. Patients on life-saving medications should not be stopped from receiving cosmetic procedures.

Hair Care Before treatment

All hair loss treatments, including Minoxidil (Rogaine(r), and hormone-blocking medication, can be continued up to the day of treatment. You can color or highlight hair up to seven days before the treatment date.

Day of Injection

Have a drink and eat before you start your treatment

Patients can experience nausea or “vasovagal” after an injection. Many people dislike needles. You will feel less queasy if you have good blood sugar levels and are well hydrated.

Use hair sprays, hair gels, and other products to minimize hair damage during the procedure

Avoid hair gels, spray hair colors or spray hair sprays the day before treatment. Your hair should be washed the day after your treatment.

Please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time to numb

Before you inject, we recommend that you apply a numbing cream. To fully work, the numbing cream must be applied for at least 20-30 minutes. We ask that all injection patients come earlier to allow for this numbing time.

Book your next appointment

We care about our loyal patients and make sure we are available when you need it. Our physicians usually book 3 to 4 months ahead of time, and we don’t like to double book patients. It is a good idea to schedule your next appointment before you leave. Every 4-6 weeks, PRP injections are recommended.

Recovery following PRP Injections for Hair Restoration

It is common to feel bruising, redness, and/or swelling after receiving PRP injections. This may last for up to 5 days. Patients often describe their scalp feeling stiff and tight right after the injections. While the cells are being activated, you may feel a tingling sensation. After treatment, do not touch, rub or press the area.

Stay Hydrated

Drink lots of water the first week following treatment to encourage healing.

No Icing

Avoid applying ice to the injection area. Ice acts as an anti-inflammatory, and inflammation is a desirable effect of the treatment. If necessary, cold compresses may be used to reduce swelling.

Tylenol, not Ibuprofen for Pain

Tylenol and other Acetaminophen-containing products may be prescribed if you feel any discomfort or pain. For a week following your procedure, you should not take Advil, Motrin or Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and Voltaren, nor aspirin.

Avoid strenuous exercise, heat, sun, and swimming pools

After PRP injections, vigorous exercise, heat, and sun can cause swelling and bruising. Avoid heavy exercise, sun exposure, saunas, and steam rooms for 48 hours. For 2 days, no swimming pools.

Do not consume alcohol, caffeine, or smoke

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine for 3 days after PRP injections. Smokers are less likely to heal quickly and may experience more complications.

Hair Care Post-Training

Avoid wetting the treated area: Your hair can be washed the next day.

Use a pH-balanced Shampoo: Only use pH-balanced shampoos for the first three days following your treatment.

Avoid hair products Day of treatment: You should not use any hair products after receiving PRP injections.

For 3 days following treatment, you should not resume Minoxidil (Formula 82M or Rogaine(r), hair coloring, or straightening).
