The freshman member from Georgia has been the subject of bipartisan condemnation in recent weeks as more of her past inflammatory comments surface.

THE HOUSE ON THURSDAY evening voted mainly along party lines to remove GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee assignments, taking an unprecedented step to discipline a member over past incendiary remarks that include elevating conspiracy theories.

In a 230–199 vote, Greene will lose spots on the House Committee on Education and Labor as well as the House Budget Committee. Democrats especially sought her removal from the Education Committee because of past comments suggesting mass school shootings are staged and recently surfaced footage showing her mocking a survivor from the 2018 Parkland, Florida, school shooting. Eleven Republicans joined all Democrats in supporting her removal.

Greene, a freshman member from Georgia, has been the subject of bipartisan condemnation in recent weeks as more of her past inflammatory comments have been unearthed. She has floated conspiracy theories like QAnon and liked comments online condoning violence against fellow lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California.

Prior to the vote, Greene publicly addressed the controversy for the first time and expressed regret for some of her previous comments. But Democrats argued she didn’t go far enough.

“I didn’t hear an apology for the incredibly dangerous and hurtful remarks that she’s made. I didn’t hear an explanation for why she’s still fundraising off of these terrible things,” House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern of Massachusetts said. “I don’t know what my colleagues found so convincing.”

While many have publicly denounced her comments, most Republicans stood in solidarity with Greene remaining on committees, noting that her remarks happened before she was a member of Congress. During debate over the resolution to expel her from committees, Republicans instead mostly focused on what they called a flawed process to remove her and raised concerns about setting a precedent where the majority party can interject in matters involving the minority.

“What the majority is really proposing today is to establish a new standard for punishing members for conduct before they ever became a member,” House Rules Committee Ranking Member Tom Cole of Oklahoma said.

As Republicans grappled with a few intraparty struggles this week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California was under mounting pressure to act on the controversy over Greene’s comments. He proposed taking her off the Education and Labor Committee in an offer to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland to halt Thursday’s vote, but the two didn’t reach a deal.

In 2019, Republicans stripped former Rep. Steve King of Iowa of his committee roles following a racist remark made to a publication. The House GOP Steering Committee, which deals with those assignments, voted unanimously to boot him off the committees.

But with no action from Republicans this time, Democrats filed a resolution to remove Greene from committees and force a vote that would put every member on the record. They fiercely condemned her comments and pushed back against the notion that they were all made in the past. From the House floor, McGovern cited comments or online activity that she made as recently as 2019 and 2020 and argued that she has recently “doubled down” on her rhetoric by fundraising off of it.

Earlier Thursday, Greene said she regretted her past statements, specifically acknowledging that 9/11 “absolutely happened” and that school shootings around the country are “absolutely real.” She also said she stopped believing the QAnon conspiracy in 2018. Until then, she had only offered contrition during a private House GOP conference meeting on Wednesday evening.

She characterized herself as a “very regular American” and said inflammatory and incendiary comments she made in 2018 “do not represent me.” But the congresswoman also lashed out at the media and tech companies while railing against a “cancel culture” she argues wants to silence her and other Republicans.

“Big media companies can take teeny tiny pieces of words that I’ve said, that you have said, and can portray us into someone that we’re not and that is wrong. Cancel culture is a real thing,” Greene said in a floor speech. “Will we allow the media that is just as guilty as QAnon of presenting truth and lies to divide us?”

But Democrats pushed on with their effort to remove her, arguing that she still hasn’t addressed or expressed remorse for other remarks that have been condemned as anti-Semitic and Islamaphobic. And some want to go even further and oust her from Congress altogether.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez of California told reporters at the Capitol on Thursday that he plans to move forward with a resolution to expel her from the House but that the timing is still being discussed with leadership. It’s still uncertain, however, that Democratic leaders will pursue his measure.

“She still helped incite a mob to break into the Capitol that caused the death of five people, used political speech to cause political violence,” Gomez said. “And that was completely during her time as an elected official. And when you’re running for office, whatever you say is also something that can be used against you here, so I think it’s still legitimate to expel her from the House.”
