A laptop is a sizable investment. If you are going out of town for a long period of time or just don’t use your computer for a while, you should properly store it so that it cannot be damaged. Storing a laptop involves protecting it from battery death, sudden changes in temperature, and harm from children or pets.

Leave the computer turned on until the battery runs out at a 40 percent charge. Turn off your computer completely. Detach from any accessories, including the mouse, speakers, or printers. Disconnect the laptop from the charger.

Close the laptop and turn it over. Use the screwdriver to unscrew the battery cover. Gently pull the battery and set it aside. Replace the battery cover and screw again.

Place the battery in the fridge and set the temperature to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The battery will hold a charge in the refrigerator. When you are ready to use the laptop again, allow the battery to warm up to room temperature before putting it back into the laptop.

Put your laptop into the laptop sleeve. Wrap it loosely in foil. Put the wrapped laptop in a cloth closet or other out of the way place where children and pets cannot reach it. Store in a controlled temperature environment, out of direct sunlight. A desk drawer is appropriate if you can lock it. Take everything else out of the drawer so no objects bump into the laptop
