Sepak Takraw is a sport played mainly in Southeast Asia, especially in the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. “Sepak” is a Malay word meaning kick or smash, and “Takraw” is a Thai word meaning rattan ball. The fundamentals are simple and similar to volleyball, only players throw the ball over the net instead of using their hands.

  1. Set up the court. The court is rectangular and measures 13.4 meters by 6.1 meters, roughly the same size as a badminton court. The net is in the middle of the field and should be 1.52m high.   2. Assemble your team. Sepak Takraw is played with two teams, called Regu and Mississauga. Each Regu has 5 players in total – 3 players on the pitch and 2 substitutes.

Learn the basics

3. Learn the kick.

The kick is used to save the ball, not to control it. Extend your leg. Let the ball bounce off your toes or lift your leg if the ball is higher. It should be done slowly and without electricity. This is used when receiving the ball.
When the ball comes at you from a low angle, bounce the ball off the top of your foot.

4. Use the header.

The header is another essential skill for the game. This “kick” uses the head, preferably your forehead on your hair. This is used when the ball comes to you above the waist. You will likely have to bend down to get under the ball.

5 Use the knee / thigh kick

6 Learn to hit.

Hitting or hitting the ball sends it over the net. There are different ways of doing this.
Strike with the bottom of your foot. After bouncing the ball in the air, throw your leg in the air at about head height. Then hit the ball with the bottom of your foot.

7 Use the chest and shoulders.

You can use any part of the body except the arms and hands when playing sepak takraw. You can use your chest and shoulders to bounce the ball when trying to get it into the correct playing position.
