What is tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis occurs when your tonsils become swollen. Tonsils are at the end of your throat and are oval-shaped. Usually, tonsillitis is triggered by a virus or bacterial infection. Some of the symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, white color or yellow color patches on your tonsils, as well as fever. Some people also experience pain in their stomach, neck as well as their head.

Treatment

·         Sleep

One of the best ways to recover is not just tonsillitis, but any illness that may come your way is to sleep as much as you can. The more rest you get, the easier it is for your body to heal.

·         Stay hydrated

Drinking enough water is highly imperative. This allows your throat to stay moist and does not let it get dry or scratchy. Drinking warm liquids such as coffee, tea, water with honey will also help soothe your throat.

·         Eating appropriate foods

Eating food such as cooked vegetables, yogurts, smoothies, and warm food like pasta can be helpful. Try to avoid foods that can further increase swollenness for your throat. Examples include chips, spicy foods, dry foods like cereal without milk. You can also eat ice cream or popsicles as a treat that will not result in harm.

·         Avoid smoking

If you smoke, then it would be best to avoid it, especially during this time. Smoking is not only harmful during tonsillitis but can generally be harmful to your whole body. It is often the root cause of many cancers, such as lung cancer. Smoking during tonsillitis will lead to your throat becoming more agitated and increase its soreness.

·         Try gargling with saltwater

To help comfort your sore throat, you can put around half a teaspoon of salt into warm water and use it to gargle. This helps ease your throat.

·         Medicines

After discussing with your doctor, you can take medicine such as Advil or Tylenol to lower your fever and help lower your throat ache. However, it is vital to get a doctor’s prescription on this so that it is taken with proper care and the side effects do not impact you in a harmful manner. Moreover, doctors can also prescribe antibiotics that help ease the symptoms and bring you back to normal.

·         Surgery

If your tonsillitis has become a case that is not being handled through the above measures, then another alternative, according to your doctor’s advice, is surgery. Extremism includes when your breathing becomes extremely difficult or challenging for you to sallow, and the throat pain becomes unbearable. Surgery is often used to remove tonsillitis which is persistent or goes away for some time and returns. There are, however, other options available such as radio waves or laser.

 Prevention

The best way to avoid getting tonsillitis in the first place is to stay clear of people who might be sick and have. A sore throat, not share your food or drinks with others, and keep washing your hands often so that no germs or bacteria enter your body.
