2N2222 is a general-purpose NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT) for general-purpose low-power amplification or switching applications. It is designed for low to medium current, low power, and medium voltage, and can run at medium high speeds. It was originally made with TO-18 metal cans, as shown in the picture. The 2N2222 is considered a very common transistor and is used as an example of NPN transistors. It is often used as a small-signal transistor, and it is still a long-lasting small general-purpose transistor. 2N2222 is part of the equipment series described by Motorola at the 1962 IRE conference. Since then, it has been manufactured by many semiconductor companies, such as Texas Instruments. The JEDEC registration of a device number ensures that all parts provided under that number meet specific ratings.

The parameters registered by JEDEC include dimensions, small signal current gain, transition frequency, maximum withstand voltage, rated current, power consumption and rated temperature, etc., which are measured under standard test conditions. Other part numbers will have different parameters. The exact specifications depend on the manufacturer, housing type and variant. Therefore, it is important to refer to the data sheet to know the exact part number and manufacturer.
