It’s safe to trust your kids with house cleaning

For children aged 4-6 years old, these are the appropriate chores

When given the opportunity, children are capable of being great human beings. Even as young children, they should be able to help around the house. When assigning chores, it is important to keep in mind your child’s age and skill level. As long as they don’t view home cleaning service as a punishment, they can have a lot of fun and feel accomplished.

Ages 2 and up

At the age of 2, you can begin giving your children small chores around the house. Children can help with tasks such as picking up toys while being supervised by an adult between 2 and 3. Below are some chore suggestions for children aged 2-3 years old:

  • Get toys and books
  • Launder laundry in a hamper
  • Help clean up the mess
  • Put their plates, cups, and silverware in the dishwasher
  • Help them make their bed
  • Dress yourself

Ages 4 – 5

Once they reach the age of 4 and 5, children should be able to complete all the chores on the previous list. The suggested chores are for children ages 4-5.

  • Set the dining table.
  • Charge and empty your dishwasher
  • Launder your laundry in the laundry room
  • Match socks and wash laundry
  • Make sure they clean up the room
  • Volunteer to help the pet family by giving them water and food.
  • Help to put away groceries

Ages 6-8

For children aged 6-8, continue to use the lists you have previously created and add them to your list.

  • Clean up counters and tables
  • Put dishes away
  • Help pack school lunch
  • Vacuum
  • Bathroom sinks and countertops should be clean
  • Do light yard chores like raking leaves or watering flowers and plants.

Ages 9-11

You can continue to use the tasks on the previous lists, but you can also include the chores for children aged 9-11 years old:

  • Clean and mop floors
  • Bathrooms with toilets and sinks that are clean and sanitary
  • Assist in the preparation of food (wash vegetables and fruits, measure ingredients).
  • Take your pet on a walk with you.
  • Get rid of the garbage
  • Vacuum the car after you have finished cleaning it.
  • Mail
  • Take weeds

Helping Hands

It will help your children learn how to be responsible in the future by giving them tasks to do on their own. This will teach them how to clean and can help instill a work ethic. These are just suggestions. Each child will work at their own pace. Your children should be able to do the tasks they feel comfortable with. Please give them the supervision they need to complete each task safely. This printable chore sheet is excellent for reusing with your children.
