After Graduation, How to Become a Pilot in the Indian Air Force?

1. CDSE Admission to the Air Force

The Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) is for graduates who wish to join the Indian Air Force. The chosen applicants are sent to the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad for instruction at the Best Flying School in India. After completing their training, commissioned officers are deployed to flying units.

CDSE Admissions Procedure

The CDSE admissions procedure consists of the following steps:

English, Maths, and General Knowledge are the elements evaluated in the written examination.

The SSB interview is divided into two phases.

Stage 1 consists of an officer intelligence rating exam as well as a picture perception and conversation test.

Stage 2 is only available to those who have passed Stage 1. This includes psychological exams administered by a psychologist, group activities, and a personal interview.

Pilot Aptitude Test- This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you do not pass this on the first try, you will never be able to apply for the flying branch again. This includes written and machine exams to assess your ability to interpret instruments, manage your actions, and mental power.

Medical examination- For men, the minimum height needed for CDS admission is 162.5 cms, with a corresponding weight. Eye vision should be 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other, with Hypermetropia correctable to 6/6 alone.

 CDSE Eligibility Requirements

Only male graduates (Three Year Course) from a recognized university (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) / BE / B Tech (Four Year Course) with an Indian passport are eligible to apply for CDSE admission. The applicant must be between the ages of 19 and 23. At the time of application, the applicant must be unmarried.

*Please keep in mind that while filling out the application form for both NDA and CDSE, you must choose your preferred wing, which is Air Force.

2. AFCAT Admission to the Air Force (SSC)

SSC is an abbreviation for Short Service Commission. Candidates cannot serve in the Indian Air Force for more than 14 years under this admission program. Candidates must pass the Air Force Common Admission Test in order to enter this branch (AFCAT). The chosen applicants are subsequently transported to the Air Force Academy at Dundigal for a 74-week training session.

Criteria for SSC Eligibility

You must be a graduate (Three Year Course) in any subject from a recognized university (with Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level) / BE / B Tech (Four Year Course) with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks. In contrast to other entrants, SSC enables both male and female applicants to apply and be a part of this prestigious organisation. Of course, the minimum age needed at the time of enrollment is 19 to 23 years.

If you have a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by the DGCA (India), you may be eligible for an age reduction of up to 25 years. You must be unmarried and a citizen of India, just like the other applicants.

3. NCC Enlistment in the Air Force

If you are a member of your school’s NCC society and have an Air Wing Senior Division’C’ Certificate, you may join the Air Force (Flying Branch) via the Directorate General National Cadet Corps or your local NCC Air Squadrons. If a candidate has received a “A” or “B” grade on their “C” Certificate, they may proceed to the SSB Interview.
