Even Though the concept of thermal cameras may seem new, they have been around quite a while now but recently came much more into the spotlight due to the pandemic. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many companies like Amazon have been using these thermal cameras to detect fever by comparing the temperature of a person’s body with the surroundings. Thermal cameras have the ability to detect the temperature by recognizing and sensing people in the room and sense their heat.

Thermal cameras are fitted with special lenses and are designed to detect infrared radiation from objects and measure it. The hotter the object, the more radiation from it. Thermal cameras have been there for a while and are used in manufacturing and engineering for condition monitoring and also used in the security sector for security purposes.

There are many benefits of thermal cameras such as:

  • Thermal imager detect elevated temperatures with the temperatures being precise with a fixed heat source to maximize accuracy.
  • It has a fast automated screening as it detects a face in seconds, finds the reliable spot, and displays pass or fail alert.
  • While maintaining social distance, it gives the same performance as a temporal thermometer.
  • It has a range of prices and solutions available prior as per your requirement.

Along with the benefits comes the use of thermal cameras. These can be used in many places for different tasks. The uses of Thermal cameras are as follows:

  • Thermal cameras can be used for medical facilities to detect fever and high body temperatures with people in large groups so that the staff and people present at the place can be protected.
  • These can also be used for inspection of homes or buildings to see if there is any moisture damage or poor insulation.
  • Used in marines to detect any enemies, icebergs, or anything approaching you.
  • Used for security purposes to detect anything even in the darkness and making a 360-degree surveillance network.

How do Thermal cameras work?

Thermal cameras detect any infrared radiation (IR) coming from an object, in other words, it detects heat. These cameras have lenses fitted which allow IR to pass through, focusing them on a special sensor array. These sensor arrays are constructed as a grid of pixels allowing the IR to pass through them and converting them into an electronic signal. These signals are then sent to a processor within the camera which converts them into algorithms into a color map of different temperatures. This map is sent to the connected screen and is displayed on the display screen.

Can COVID-19 be detected using thermal cameras?

Thermal cameras are not medical devices that can detect any type of virus or any medical disease so, therefore, thermal cameras do not detect coronavirus. It can at least give security at the workplace as it can detect body temperatures. One of the symptoms of coronavirus is high body temperature. This can provide a little protection for the staff and people present at the workplace by not entering the people to the workplace with some sort of temperature.
