Trump: 25th Amendment ‘Zero Risk to Me’ but Will ‘Haunt’ Joe Biden

The president, in his first public appearance since last week’s assault on the Capitol, also called the House’s efforts to impeach him a ‘witch hunt.’

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP on Tuesday dismissed calls for his removal over accusations that he incited last week’s deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, but he said the effort to encourage his vice president and Cabinet to deem him unfit for office could come back to “haunt” President-elect Joe Biden and his administration.

“The 25th Amendment is of zero risk to me but will come back to haunt Joe Biden and the Biden administration. As the expression goes, be careful what you wish for,” Trump said, reading from prepared remarks.

Speaking in front of his signature border wall in Alamo, Texas, Trump also denounced the impeachment effort by House lawmakers, calling it a continuation of the “witch hunt” that has targeted him since he took office.

The event in Texas was Trump’s first public appearance since Wednesday, when he spoke to supporters who then stormed the U.S. Capitol in an assault that left five dead, including a Capitol Police officer who was reportedly beaten by rioters with a fire extinguisher.

The insurrectionists were attempting to stop Congress from certifying Biden’s Electoral College win after Trump for months insisted that the election was a fraud and that he was cheated out of victory.

The Democatic-controlled House has since taken up a resolution urging Trump’s Cabinet to remove him from office using the 25th Amendment, which appears to have no chance of happening. The House on Wednesday will vote on articles of impeachment against Trump. Some House Republicans are expected to vote to impeach the president.

Trump on Tuesday offered lukewarm disapproval of the rioters’ actions.

“Millions of our citizens watched Wednesday as a mob stormed the Capitol and trashed the halls of government,” Trump said. “As I have consistently said throughout my administration, we believe in respecting America’s history and traditions, not tearing them down. We believe in the rule of law not in violence or rioting.”

“This has been a difficult year and a very difficult election,” Trump said. “The pandemic has made it a very, very difficult year for our country and virtually every country all over the world. Now is the time for our nation to heal and it’s time for peace and for calm.”
