The ovaries and the uterus are connected by the fallopian tubes, which are female reproductive organs. The fallopian tubes transport an egg from the ovary to the uterus every month during ovulation, which happens approximately in the center of a menstrual cycle. Fertilisation takes place in the fallopian tubes. If sperm fertilizes an egg, it travels through the conduit to the uterus to be implanted.

According to the Best fertility & IVF specialist, The pathway for sperm to reach the tube, as well as the route back to the uterus for the fertilized egg, is blocked if a Fallopian tube is blocked.

Symptoms

Any person may develop symptoms such as pelvic or belly pain as a result of a blocked fallopian tube.

A fertilized egg may become trapped if a fallopian tube becomes blocked. Ectopic conception is the medical term for this situation.

Ectopic pregnancy is normally confirmed during a scan and does not necessarily cause signs. Some women, however, may report pregnancy symptoms including stomach pain on one side of the body or vaginal bleeding. Any woman who believes she is carrying an ectopic pregnancy should seek medical help as soon as possible.

Reasons behind this

A variety of factors can cause fallopian tubes to become blocked, including:

  • Inflammation in the pelvis
  • a previous burst appendix or had a sexually transmitted disease, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia endometriosis, a disorder in which the womb lining grows outside of the uterus recent abdominal surgery
  • The swelling and fluid at the end of a fallopian tube are known as hydrosalpinx.

All of these diseases have the potential to damage the fallopian tubes or this part of the body. These conditions or surgeries, in most cases, result in scar tissue that can clog the channels.

Fertility implications

The ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes make up the female reproductive system. If all of these three places have been compromised by a medical condition, becoming pregnant could be more difficult. A fallopian tube connects each of the two ovaries to the uterus. The ovaries store eggs and release them at regular intervals during the month, with one ovary releasing an egg per month. If one of the fallopian tubes is blocked, an egg can get fertilized in the healthy tube. This is less probable if both the tubes are  blocked.

Surgery and treatment

Surgically opening blocked fallopian tubes could be necessary. This, however, is dependent on the severity of the scarring and the location of the blockage.

Each of the following techniques is used to open the fallopian tube during surgery:

  • Scar tissue removal
  • a new opening on the outside of the fallopian tube
  •  a new opening on the interior of the fallopian tube

Pregnancy possibility

Following surgery for blocked fallopian tubes, it is likely to get pregnant. The mode of therapy and the severity of the block will determine the likelihood of being pregnant.

If the blockage is close to the uterus, the chances of a healthy pregnancy increase. If the blockage is near the ovary at the end of the fallopian tube, the chances of success are smaller.

Since surgery to repair tubes weakened by infection or ectopic pregnancy, the chances of becoming pregnant are slim. It depends on how much of the tube needs to be removed and which section of the tube needs to be removed.

Before beginning therapy, speak to the doctor and learn about your chances of achieving a healthy pregnancy.
