Mil-spec paracord is a standardized product made according to a government contract. It can vary by country, but usually, it means that the item was determined to be equal or better than all other competing products in its class.

This is very important when it comes to paracord. There are many, many different types of paracord on the market today. However, there are only two that are considered mil-spec. Mil-C-5040 is the document that specifies the standard for military-grade 550 cord or parachute cord. Any cord that meets this standard can be designated “mil specific” or “mil-spec” paracord. It’s important to note that you can only call your cord mil-spec if it passes this military specification. If an item doesn’t carry this designation, you should not buy it because it could fall apart at any time. Fifteen feet of rope can be an awfully long way down!

Very few companies make genuine Mil-Spec Paracord, and even fewer sell to the public. This is part of what makes Tough Grid unique, as they sell Mil-Spec paracord to both the private and public sectors.
