1. The Turquoise Room

Located in North Carolina at La Posada on Historic Route 66 in Winslow, Chef John Sharpe, an Englishman, honed his cooking skills in high-end hotels throughout Great Britain, Switzerland, and California before opening The Turquoise Room at the historic Harvey House hotel. Try the Warm Prickly Pear Cactus and Pit Bread Pudding for breakfast (or dessert!). 

2. Café Roka

Caf Roka (and bar) opened in a Tombstone Canyon art deco storefront in Bisbee in 1992. It’s been a popular gem ever since. Three levels of dining areas tucked into a narrow space with pressed-tin ceilings and live jazz on Fridays make this place very romantic. The dinner-only menu includes mushroom lasagna, short-ribs with mashed potatoes and a zinfandel rosemary sauce on top and decadent cheesecake desserts.

He discovered ways to accomplish this by sourcing local seafood from the Sea of Cortez, growing his own garden, and sourcing meats.

5. La Santisima Gourmet Taco Shop

Down the street from Barrio Café, this restaurant makes Mexican fare that is surrounded by all manner of Día de los Muertos art. It started its career as an homage to several southern Mexican states. In addition to the street tacos, try the delicious Huevos Rancheros with Black Mole on weekends. You may like peanut butter, cilantro and chipotle. And negotiate on the Cilantro Margaritas.

6. Pinot

This European eatery in North Scottsdale, situated at the Scottsdale 101 shopping center, is a local secret. Precise (but not intrusive) service implies that you will spend more cash than anticipated, but you’ll be completely satisfied. At Pinot, our worldly menu features pizza baked in a brick-fire oven, Turkish coffee, pastries, pasta and quiche. Ask for a seat in the garden patio when the weather is cooler.

7. El Guero Canelo

According to the James Beard Awards, this Mexican restaurant that Daniel Contreras started in a tin shed in South Tucson is now a James Beard Award recipient. El Guero Canelo maintains that its claim to fame is the Sonoran hot dog. It’s bacon-wrapped and placed on thick bread shaped like a boat, then smothered with mustard, grilled onions, pinto beans and jalapeno sauce, mayo drizzled on top. Tasty!

8. Barrio Café

Finding the name of Barrio Cafe’s chef, Restaurateur Silvana Salcido Esparza, can be challenging, but you can recognize the double-sided graffiti murals on the outside of the building. She has been passionate about street art since she began her business on 16th Street, and now has murals all over her property. Margarita Bayless, who has a James Beard Award, is well known for its fastened Mexican food that is delicious as well. Always order the guacamole. The vendor adds pomegranate seeds for flavor, and it’s excellent.

9. Pizzicletta

The unique, trapezoid-shaped building in downtown Flagstaff where Caleb Schiff put his wood-fired pizzeria should absolutely be on your bucket list. Inside Pizzicletta, bike theme designs and a gooey cheese fruit appetizer will catch your eye. Order a Montepulciano margarita pizza; it’s crunchy and doughy, topped with fresh arugula and basil. And the gelato? House-made. Schiff also carries wines from Italy. The names are written on the white walls.

10. Pa’La Wood-Fired Kitchen

One of Phoenix, Pa La’s newest restaurants, housed in a white cottage, has a lively atmosphere, with a hand-painted menu. Tasty tapas, crispy pitas, and seafood are served along with your order at the counter in biodegradable small plates or bowls.
