Introduction
We have a confession to make: we are drone junkies. We can’t go more than a week without buying one. And, if you’re like us and want to buy your first drone, there are some important things to consider before you plunk down your hard-earned cash.
We’ve had this issue a few times now and I think some special programming might be ordered.
If the drone is not responding to the controller, it could be because of a bad battery. It’s also possible that your phone or remote control isn’t working properly. If you have lost signal from both these devices, then there are other issues with your drone or its flight controls (e.g., broken gyroscope).
1. Use a drone that only has 4 propellers.
Drones with only four propellers are safer than ones with five because they’re lighter and less likely to crash. They can also be cheaper to replace if they break, which makes them easier on your pocketbook.
The downside is that some drones have more than four propellers—for example, the DJI Phantom 4 has nine rotors (six front-facing and three back-facing). If you want something similar but don’t want all those extra parts then look for a drone like the Hubsan X4 Quadcopter instead of one with six or eight rotors.
2. Get one with decent battery life.
The battery life of a drone is one of the most important aspects to consider when buying one. You must know how long your drone can fly before it needs to be charged, and what the average charge time is for your particular model.
The more powerful the motor and propellers, the faster it will go but also means less fun if you don’t have enough time to enjoy them! 3. Make sure there are guard rings around the propellers.
When you’re building your drone, with a drone kit make sure there are guard rings around the propellers. Propellers are sharp and can cause injury if they hit you or other people nearby. Guard rings should also be made of a soft material like rubber or plastic so that they don’t damage the blades when removed from their socket during transport, storage and use.
Guard rings should be easy to remove when not needed for flight as well; this will prevent accidents where someone might accidentally lose their propeller protection while flying their drone outdoors (which could lead to serious injury).
4. Don’t buy cheap drones.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of buying a drone, but a cheap one is not worth the money. Cheap drones don’t last long and can break easily, making them hard to fly. They’re also more difficult to repair and find parts for, which makes them more expensive down the road if you need repairs or replacement parts.
If you want an affordable hobby drone that will last longer than most people expect (and maybe even make it through some hard use), then go with something like DJI’s Mavic Air or Yuneec’s Typhoon H with its four propellers instead of three on top plus one below each handlebar grip—there are pros/cons either way but they’re both reliable enough so long as they have batteries that aren’t dead yet!
