Upper unit oil change

  • How to change the oil:
  • What kind of oil to use: We recommend using synthetic motor oil in all our boats. If you want to go with a conventional formula, we suggest using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 or Amsoil 20-50 synthetic gear oils. These oils have been specifically designed for marine engines and offer great protection against corrosion while still being able to flow freely at high temperatures.
  • What kind of filter? We recommend replacing your upper unit’s paper element every 60 hours (3 days), or every 40 hours (2 days). We also recommend changing your lower unit’s paper element every 30 hours if you are going for long trips where there might be more dust on the road than normal conditions would allow for.* How often should I change them? For both units, we recommend changing it before any extended storage period starts as this will ensure maximum performance from these parts!

Lower unit oil change

The lower unit oil change kit includes the following items:

  • Oil filter. This can be either a HDT or Fram PH7 (depending on your engine).
  • It’s best to use 10W-30 motor oil in this case, but any type will do as long as it’s suitable for your engine and vehicle.
  • Drain plug gasket and bolt(s). These are typically included with each service kit we sell, but if they aren’t included in yours then you may need to purchase them separately from an auto parts store near you!

Water separator filter

A water separator filter is a disposable device that traps impurities before they reach the engine. It’s often called an oil separator, but it doesn’t have any moving parts and thus doesn’t need to be lubricated. The filter can be replaced when it becomes clogged or damaged, which is typically every 100 hours of operation (or every 300 hours if you use synthetic oil).

When changing out your water separator filter, make sure you change it according to manufacturer instructions—you don’t want to damage your engine! If you do get stuck replacing it yourself, read our article on how to remove a water separator filter from a boat motor for more help.

Spark plugs

  • Remove the spark plugs from their respective cylinders with a spark plug socket and ratchet. If you’re not sure how to do this, consult your Cruisers manual or call us toll-free at 1-855-455-6532 for assistance with any of our services!

  • Prepare for the job by checking your owner’s manual to see what needs to be done before you start working on your cruiser. If there are any specific instructions or precautions that need to be followed, follow them carefully.
  • Make sure you have all the tools necessary for a successful repair job: screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips), pliers/needlenose (flathead/Phillips), wrench set wrenches (10mm & 13mm) nut driver set nut drivers(14mm & 18mm). And don’t forget safety glasses!
