Performing Lakshmi puja during Diwali is one of the main rituals in the five-day-long festival. Here are a few steps on how to perform Lakshmi puja at home during this time of the year-

  • The first step consists of cleaning. The rooms, kitchens, puja room everything should be cleaned before the puja. You can start doing this week before Diwali.
  • Sprinkle gangajal in every corner of the house to purify your home and the puja space.
  • Set up the altar where the puja is to be done.
  • Decorate the altar or the platform with a red cloth and some lights if you like. Put some grains on the cloth where the Kalash is to be placed.
  • Place the Kalash gently in the center and fill it with water and put a whole mango leaf that has five or seven leaves in it. Put some flower petals and coins around the Kalash.
  • If you have a painting of goddess Lakshmi then put it beside the Kalash in front of the wall for support. If it is an idol then place it gently on the platform and spread some flowers and coins in front of it. You can also draw a lotus or designs on the platform before placing the idol.
  • Put lord Ganesha’s painting or the idol on the right side of the Kalash. Repeat the same things done while placing Lakshmi.
  • Light diyas or incense sticks in front of the deities. You can use ghee while lighting the diyas. Use a Panchmukhi Diya or oil lamp for this purpose.
  • Prepare a puja thali with Haldi, sindoor, rice grains, sandalwood, etc.
  • You can also bathe the idols or clean the paintings of the deities before starting the puja.
  • Offer some sweets like laddu or coconuts or other sweets in a thali and keep it in front of the gods and goddesses.
  • Now you can start the puja by putting sindoor on the Kalash and the mango leaves. Offer some flowers to the deities and the Kalash.
  • Chant the Lakshmi puja mantra from the book you have.
  • Perform aarti with the diya and incense sticks.
  • Meditate for a few minutes and ask for her blessings and forgiveness.
