St Joseph College of Commerce

In 1949, the parent college created the Department of Commerce St Joseph College, which was later split off as an autonomous college and granted Section 2(f) and 12 B of the UGC Act recognition. The College holds the distinction of being one of the first five colleges in Karnataka to receive autonomy. In the third cycle of reaccreditation, NAAC gave it an “A” grade, and the University Grants Commission named it a “College with Potential for Excellence” in 2010. Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society oversees the College (BJES).

With more than 130 years of history, St Joseph’s College of Commerce is one of the oldest colleges in Karnataka. The Fathers of the French Mission established St. Joseph’s College in 1882, and Dr. Bonnand, the vicar apostolic of the Coramandel coast, proposed the idea of establishing a college of this size. It is one of the five colleges in Bangalore that received academic autonomy in 2005.
