If you want to book a flight to Portugal, we recommend TAP Portugal. This TAP Portugal review describes what flying is like, what meals it offers, and why it’s the perfect option for traveling from the United States to Europe. Be sure to check your flight options before booking your ticket.

What’s it like to fly TAP Portugal Airlines?

As a traveler traveling between the United States and Europe on many airlines, I was delighted and surprised by TAP Portugal. Not only did they provide excellent customer service, but the aircraft was very comfortable. The Economy Extra Seats on the Airbus A321 Neo have the best reclining angles available for night flights Economy Seats.

What destinations does TAP fly to?

In the United States, TAP has six return airport hubs. San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, New York (flying from the EEA-Newark), Miami, and Washington DC. They fly to 86 different destinations in 36 countries.

TAP Air Portugal Stopover Program

TAP has a stopover program that allows you to visit Lisbon or Porto on your way to your final destination. You can stay 1-5 nights without paying additional flight charges. The airline also offers the opportunity to book discounts at hotels in stopover cities.

Seat options on TAP Portugal

TAP flights have three types of seats: Economy, Economy Extra and Executive Class. The differences are as follows:

  • Economy seats feature a 31-inch (28-inch for long-haul flights, 28-inch for short-haul flights) seat pitch, 5-inch reclining, and aircraft rear seats. By comparison, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have seat pitches of 31 to 32 inches.
  • Economy Extra Seats feature a 34-inch seat pitch, 7-inch reclining, and aircraft front seats.
  • Executive class seats are flat with a 42-inch seat pitch. These seats are very comfortable and you have no trouble falling asleep.

I flew Economy Extra from Newark to Porto (which was an Airbus A321 Neo) and was delighted with the space under my feet and the comfort of the bed. I’ve flown dozens of transatlantic flights, but this is the first time I’ve actually slept for more than four hours. I wish more planes had such seats.

On the way back, I skipped executive class on an Airbus A330-900neo, but the seats are very comfortable. Nobody was sitting next to me because it had a lot of feet spread out (I loved it because it was 5’11) and it had a 1-2-1 configuration.

Meals on TAP Airlines

Let’s be honest, it’s hard to find a good airline meal. On overseas flights, I had a snack for dinner and breakfast. Supper was pasta or chicken. It didn’t stand out, but I think I went to pasta. That was what you expected from an in-flight meal. The morning breakfast consisted of granola bar, fruit and coffee.

On the return flight, I had a very different experience. I have presented a menu with an appetizer, starter, main course (choose one of 3), and a dessert trilogy.

Of course, drinks are included, and they offer a selection of Portuguese wine. The starter and main course were served together and turns out there was no dessert served. (Made be a bit sad because that’s usually my favorite part of the meal).

TAP Air Portugal Onboard experience

Each seat (for long-haul flights) has a personal entertainment system. The seatback has a large TV screen with movies, TV shows, music, games, documentaries and even Portuguese lessons. WiFi is available on board, and seats have power outlets and USB ports.

The flight attendants were very friendly and helpful and were always available (with service in both classes). There are no complaints about TAP Portugal’s services.

Conclusion:

Overall, my experience with TAP Portugal was very good. I think my only suggestion for improvement is that airport staff need to communicate better with passengers.

If you are considering traveling with TAP Portugal, feel free to book your trip. For comfort, we recommend booking Economy Extra and Economy Seats on long-haul routes. And if Portugal isn’t on your radar, it definitely should be. It’s one of our favorite destinations!
