About ENT Specialist
To become an ENT, you will need to earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or medical school. You will then need to complete four years of college and five to eight years of postgraduate training. Once you graduate, you will need to pass an exam to receive your license.
Among the conditions treated by ENTs are allergies, asthma, sore throats, and sleep apnea. They also specialize in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Aside from being able to perform delicate surgeries, they are also experts at diagnosing and treating diseases of the head, neck, and ears.
First Visit with an ENT
Your first visit with an ENT specialist will involve a thorough examination of your throat, nose, and ears. During this visit, your doctor will talk with you about your medical history. This is important, because it will help the doctor determine what type of treatment is best for you.
The ENT will then order sleep tests if they feel it is necessary. In addition, your ENT may ask you to undergo further tests at a later date.
If your ENT suspects a serious medical condition, he or she will perform a biopsy. Often, swollen lymph nodes are a sign of an infection, such as a cold. Other symptoms include night sweats and unexplained weight loss.
