1. DOT Physicals: Drivers whose vehicles are covered by federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations must undergo and pass a comprehensive physical exam at least every two years. The physical exams are conducted by certified medical examiners – physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants. Drivers who pass the physical exam will be issued a Medical Examiner’s Certificate – also known as a DOT card – that says they are medically qualified to drive. The OHC staff of certified examiners provides these physical exams and ensures that drivers are meeting the necessary requirements.
  2. Sleep Apnea Testing: The DOT requires certified examiners to screen for sleep apnea, since it is a common condition among truck drivers and can lead to dangerous drowsiness on the road. If sleep apnea is suspected or diagnosed, the OHC can refer the driver to a sleep apnea specialist for testing and treatment options, and then monitor the driver to be sure they meet the DOT’Ss definition of adequate treatment.
  3. Drug and Alcohol Testing: Vehicle operators that require commercial drivers’ licenses are subject to strict regulations around drug and alcohol use. The OHC can provide testing, random pool management, and the required Medical Review Officer (MRO) review to ensure that drivers comply with these regulations.
  4. Injury Care and Physical Therapy: Truck drivers may experience pain or injury from vibration, sitting for long periods of time, and loading/unloading duties. When injuries occur, the OHC can evaluate and prescribe treatment to address these issues and prevent further injury. This care may include recommendations for modified work duties or physical therapy, which is conveniently available in each of the two OHC clinic locations and other parts of our network.
  5. Preventative Care: Regular checkups such as the DOT physical exams can also serve as a preventive care exam to help drivers maintain their health and catch health-related issues early on. The OHC can provide these services and help drivers stay healthy and on the road.
