India boasts of a diverse culture influenced by rich heritage and history which is also reflected in the interiors of an Indian home. Be it temple motif architecture from the South or intricate carvings seen on Mughal monuments – Indian interiors have drawn their inspiration from everything aesthetic. Being an avid reader with a deep interest in history and evolution, decorating my home with a desi touch has always been my dream. Last year, I managed to buy a 3BHK residential flat near Budge Budge situated in a gated complex with plenty of amenities. The affordable apartment near Batanagar is spacious and has a well-thought interior that gave me a lot of scopes to decorate it in my own Indian traditional style.

Distinct features of Indian interior:

1. Colour:

The vibrant colour pallet of Indian interior design is all about being exotic and elegant. From earthy hues such as brown, tan, ochre yellow to pretty pastels of modern times with the combination of rich, dark and vibrant shades – is a hallmark of Indian interior design. However, don’t let the huge spectrum of colours overwhelm the space as this may lead to visual chaos.

2. Furniture:

Solid wood furniture is commonly used in Indian household. Indians always prefer durability over trend and that’s why exotic wood like rosewood, teak and ebony are the first choice for designing furniture. They not only look elegant but have a rustic appeal that reflects our colonial nostalgia. Heavy wooden tables, bench-style sofas or carved armchairs are part of traditional Indian household.

3. Décor items:

Typical Indian household is all about the exciting variety of handicrafts that might include idols, statues, wall hangings, embroidered rugs, mirrors, oil lamps etc. The predominant presence of traditional elements makes the space lively. Handwoven fabrics from different parts of the country have their own unique style which is commonly seen in drapes, cushion covers, bedspreads, table mats and other home décor objects.

4. Patterns and Motifs:

The prominence of different patterns and motifs like flowers, leaves, birds and mandala are very important parts of a typical Indian household. They have a deep-rooted religious and cultural connection to our country. Each region of India has its own art and style to offer. Tribal prints on bedsheets or elegant tapestries on the wall – the patterns reflect the diversified beauty of India. Fine fabrics with dabu or ikat prints can be used for upholstering your cushions while cotton or khadi can be used for side chairs.

Apart from these general features, here are 5 quick tips to add to your home décor for that desired desi touch:

1. Carve out some space for the quintessential Pooja room. Have pearly white marble flooring that will ooze purity and elegance.

2. The huge array of Indian paintings and artwork can do wonders on your wall. Create an accent wall with traditional art forms like Madhubani paintings, Tanjore paintings or Warli art that will look typically Indian.

3. Go for some rustic patio furniture with pops of colour and potted plants to place on your balcony. Throw in some vibrant cushions with desi prints and motifs for interesting complements.

4. Framed mirrors can be an interesting addition to the bland naked corners of your home. Highlight them with proper lighting to make space look more elegant.

5. Add extra zing to your home interiors with authentic and colourful patchwork. It can give your carpets, cushion covers and tapestry a brand new style statement.
