Student visa requirements in the United States

There are three categories of student visas available from the US government:

  • F-1 Student Visa- to study at a recognized US college or university or to study English at an English language institute, you will need
  • J Visa- for participation in an exchange program, such as high school and university studies.
  • M Student Visa- for non-academic or vocational training or study in the United States

You must first apply to and be accepted by a US school or university that is recognized by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program as a first step (SEVP). You will receive a Form I-20 from the institution’s international student office once you have been accepted, which is a paper record of your information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System database (SEVIS).
