Has retro made a return to the kitchen?

Author aimeeharrington, 5 years ago | 3 min read | 125

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a resurgence of Adidas Originals, Polaroid cameras, hoop earrings, the lot. But what about within our homes? Have we seen any particular comebacks? As we see the instagram world full of people bringing back dado rails and DIY wall panelling, the kitchen is seeing some comebacks take place over the years. In this article, we reflect on kitchen resurgences over the years and predict the future of interior design for kitchens.

Why is retro so popular?

When your house is on trend and just the way you want it, you feel great too! As home renovations are a huge trend on instagram, having a unique home that is also modern seems to be everyone’s wishes at the moment.

As the kitchen is now the home of living, we are yet to see any massive retro resurgences come back into fashion. However, some very subtle changes are happening, including the return of two coloured kitchens and the walk-in larders, which we are going to explore into a little bit further.

Are two coloured kitchens coming back into fashion?

In the ultra modern kitchens, at the moment, two colours are so on trend. Maybe your kitchen cupboards are a stylish, shiny light grey, but your feature island in the middle features a little darker shade of grey. If you thought that this trend was anything new, it is worthwhile to note that two tonal (although perhaps in a slightly different way) has been around for years!

Debuting in the 90s, high gloss bright, neon cabinets were a massive kitchen craze back in the day. As something a bit quirky compared to the traditional plain coloured kitchen, this trend has come back with a twist. Instead of being brightly coloured, neutral two tonal colours are now the next big thing.

Is the walk-in larder coming back?

We are living for Sunday kitchen live, Nigella, and all of the other cookery programmes at the minute. Whilst we are gaining some baking or cooking inspiration from the chefs, we also have a right good look at the Kitchens too. We bet that as as soon as one of these Chefs brings back the kitchen walk-in larder, so will the rest of the nation.

As walk-in pantries or larders have always been a big craze in the US, in the UK it has been a little bit different. As kitchens have gotten that bit niftier and storage facilities better, there has been no need to incorporate a huge walk-in larder, especially if you don’t have a big family to feed.

However, it will certainly be interesting to see if celebrity chefs, influencers, and others bring back the walk-in larder in a few years time, as we’re sure this will be a massive comeback!

Retro is coming back in

Fashion has been one of those arenas where trends come and go and one where the parents say, “oh we used to wear those back in our day.” But as kitchens bite a little bit more into your disposable income than fashion, trends come and go a little bit less often.

We’ll be sure to see more and more trends return into 2021 and beyond! We’ll keep you posted.
