13、 What is a diamond?

It is customary to call diamonds that reach the gem level diamonds diamonds. It is a crystal mineral crystallized from a single carbon element in a special environment, and is also the only gem mineral composed of single elements. Gems and diamonds (i.e. diamonds) are not only hard (Mohs hardness is 10, 1100 times higher than quartz), but also have extremely high anti-wear ability and chemical stability; Strong luster, not easy to wear after processing, can shine diamond luster for a long time; Moreover, its refractive index is large (2.42) and its dispersion is strong (0.044, the strongest among natural colorless gems). When the diamond is cut into dozens of facets, the white light that shoots into the diamond is dispersed into monochromatic light in the process of refraction, showing a seven color neon like luster, showing a brilliant and crystal like optical effect. This strong dispersion is the most precious feature of diamonds, which is beyond the reach of any other gem. Therefore, it is known as the “King of Gems”. Diamonds are mainly produced in South Africa, Australia, Zaire and Botswana. They are mainly used for making diamond rings, necklaces, earrings, brooches and other accessories.

14、 What are sister gems – rubies and sapphires?

Ruby and sapphire are beautiful and transparent corundum. Their chemical composition is aluminum oxide, which should be colorless when pure. They contain a small amount of pigment ions and show different colors, such as red ruby containing chromium, blue sapphire containing titanium and iron. Red and blue gems are transparent to translucent, with glass luster. They have obvious polychrome under a dichroic mirror, with a hardness of 9 and a specific gravity of 4; Shell like fracture without cleavage; Under ultraviolet light, ruby has obvious red fluorescence; Sapphires do not fluoresce, except for a few varieties produced in Sri Lanka and Kashmir. The main countries producing rubies in the world are Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, while the main countries producing sapphires are Australia, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and China. Red and blue gems are often used as high-end accessories such as ring face, female corsage, ear stud, tie clip, etc.
