Gamers remember the intense video gaming era as one of the most nostalgic years of their life. There were console companies busy making tons of gaming consoles for tweens and teens at that time, together four console brands released their new models and variety of games in the marketplace in a couple of years. Sega Dream Cast was released in 1988 in Japan and reached the United Kingdom in early 1999.

Above all others, PlayStation 2 won the rivalry and comparatively Sega Dream Cast was a failure.

The Best Features of Sega Dream Cast

It was one of the first consoles to have a built-in network module chip for online and internet connectivity. It connected to internet browsers directly for use. It required VGA (video graphics array) adapter to connect the image with the TV and also Dreamcast AV cable; original. It even had an installed microphone! The experience of the arcade port resembled that of the public arcade game. It ports to connect a keyboard for chatting as well. It had this feature for communication during online games. Dream Cast had Japan’s most favorite and top-rated game, known as Shenmue. This game has recently been introduced as a third sequel to the original for PS4.

In other words, It should have been a major success. These extraordinary features would have made Sega Games top rated successful. However, the generation was new to them. While companies took it slow, Sega games had to offer more than simple processors and model upgrade.

Why was Sega Dream Cast Unsuccessful?

If Sony had not released the PlayStation successor then we could say Dream Cast would have taken its place. However, this was not the case. The Dream Cast had minor faults and fortune itself. Some journalists and reviewers commented on the Dream Cast model. They made one basic point clear, that the Dream Cast was way ahead of its time and the gamer generation was new to a lot of extra features of the model.

The Single Analog Stick VMU

Instead of a casual controller, the Dream Cast had an original Visual Memory Unit (VMU). As gamers were more interested in purchasing the advanced controller of PS, they pointed out defects in the Sega console’s controller. It was larger than an average video game controller size. Consisting of a single analogue stick, the gamers did not enjoy the model, as a double analogue stick controller is more convenient while playing. It played certain mini-games of its own.

The Gaming Library

One of the vastest game library full of adventure and action was of the Dream Cast’s. The original most favorite masterpieces of the era were included in the model’s game section. Most of them were later on given sequels and made series for other brand models.

Discontinuation

The Sega Company had to stop the mid-launch of the Dream Cast consoles. There was high saturation of PS2 already and by 2001 March, the expensive console reach less than 50 and major loss of the Company. It would have been a huge success if it was launched at a fortunate time.
