Will There Be a Stimulus Check in 2022?

Author eitanraine, 3 years ago | 4 min read | 33

While Congress has yet to approve plans for a stimulus check in 2022, some states are implementing their own programs. For example, some states have created their own tax relief programs. The expanded federal Child Tax Credit, which was part of the American Rescue Plan passed into law in March 2021, has been a source of contention in Congress. The program provides American families with $250 or $300 per child per year for the second half of the year, or $1,500 or $1,800. Families can claim this money when they file their taxes in 2022.

Income requirements for first, second, and third stimulus checks

To qualify for the first, second, and third stimulus checks in 2020, you must make less than $75,000 a year. This is the same income limit as in 2015. If you are married filing jointly, your income cannot exceed $160,000. If you’re single, you must make less than $80,000.

If you’re a noncitizen, you cannot qualify for the first and second stimulus checks. However, if you’re married and your spouse has a Social Security number, you may be able to claim the third stimulus check. However, you must file your taxes in the current year in order to receive the third check.

Unlike the first and second rounds, these checks are available for dependents as well as adults. However, you must have a child that was born in 2021 to qualify for the program. If your child was born in 2021, you might be eligible for up to $1,400 from the stimulus check. However, if you had a child born in 2022, you’d be eligible for the full child tax credit of $3,600.

While it’s not necessary to file taxes to receive the first, second, and third stimulus checks, you must make sure that your income qualifies for the payments. You can submit your information online to make sure that you are eligible for these payments. Once you’ve submitted your information, you will be mailed the stimulus checks.

Cost of COVID relief package

In addition to continued COVID relief, Congress has also approved a third round of stimulus checks. This money is worth $600 per qualifying adult and child dependent, and can be claimed on 2020 or 2021 tax returns. For the second round of stimulus checks, recipients will receive up to $600 per adult.

Chance of a fourth stimulus check in 2022

The chances of a fourth stimulus check are almost nil right now. The economy is doing better now and has added 17.4 million jobs since May 2020. The unemployment rate is now 4.8%, well below the 5% full employment level. This is a major improvement compared to the 14.8% unemployment rate of April 2020. Yet, politicians still seem to lack the will to pass a stimulus check.

The focus on infrastructure spending by the Biden administration, coupled with criticism of the last stimulus, has made it unlikely that the government will release another cash infusion anytime soon. Moreover, it could boost inflation and cause shortages. But economist Rob Tennant of Texas A&M Central Texas argues that the government’s infrastructure spending will spark the economy in the years to come.

The possibility of a fourth stimulus check in 2022 is low. While there is still bipartisan support for an expanded Child Tax Credit, the current climate and makeup of Congress are not conducive to a fourth stimulus check. The possibility of another stimulus check is still there, but experts say it’s unlikely in the foreseeable future.

The fourth stimulus check has stalled in Congress because of disagreement between the Democrats and Republicans. As a result, a bill to offer tax rebates to residents is on hold. Meanwhile, rising gas prices have made it difficult for lawmakers to agree on a gas tax holiday. Nonetheless, Congress is still working on a bill to create a gas relief stimulus check that will pay families up to $400 per month until 2022.
