Types of drug testing
There are various tests that can detect traces of commonly-abused drugs in a person’s system.
Hair strand drug testing can give a comprehensive overview of a person’s drug use over a period of time. If the donor has sufficiently long hair, it can provide a history of up to 12 months.
Oral fluid drug testing (also known as a saliva drug test) is a quick & convenient test that can be carried out onsite using a compact testing device. Tests like this are ideal for employers who need a way to screen their workforce. If the test gives a positive result, a more detailed follow-up test is recommended.
An oral fluid test has a detection period of approximately 48 hours, depending on the type of substance taken.
Urine drug testing is another convenient onsite test that does not require sending samples off to a testing lab. This test uses a self-contained sample pot with built-in detection strips that can detect a number of drugs and/or their metabolites. Urine drug testing is an ideal on-the-spot test that can be followed-up with a more detailed test if necessary.
Nail drug testing is a good alternative to hair testing – for example if the donor has little or no head hair, or is unwilling to have their hair cut. It can detect substance abuse going back as far as twelve months. The only drawback is that it can’t give a historic overview like hair testing can. Body hair can also be used if head hair testing is not possible.
