For so many years, ITIL has been among the top professional of the ITSM framework, ITSM means Information Technology Service Management. ITIL is a type of infrastructure library which is a set of detailed practices for IT service management.

ITIL means IT Infrastructure Library. The infrastructure library was first introduced in the ’80s if you are associated with the IT industry and want to speed your career progression than the ITIL framework is the best option for you.

The significance of the ITIL framework is currently in the digital age, the ITIL 3 had some limitations and insufficiency which was pointed out by many business organizations and IT experts. So the owners decided to update ITIL 3 with news tools and frameworks so that it can continue to maintain its position in the Information Technology market.

Soon, they updated the version and launched it in the market many questions were raised regarding the certifications and the efficiency of ITIL 4, with the recent development done in the ITIL framework was to become an ITIL expert by getting trained and certified.

For achieving the certification you can obtain it online but if you are already working with an ITIL platform it is advisable to become familiar with the tools and services and learn the new versions.

Types of ITIL 4 Certification Level

The alignment with the latest version is the best thing about ITIL 4. It is not necessary to upgrade to the latest version if you already have owned an ITIL 3 certification, many of the topics which are covered in the ITIL 4 certification course are same as in ITIL 3 but some new topics have also been introduced in ITIL 4.

The topics which are covered in ITIL 4 are especially focused on Information Technology.

In the ITIL 4 certification level, the first level of certification is the Foundation level and along with that, there are four more levels of ITIL certificate.

The ITIL certification levels are mentioned below:

  • ITIL Foundation Level (first level).
  • ITIL Specialist Level (second level).
  • ITIL Strategist Level (third level).
  • ITIL Leader Level (fourth level).
  • ITIL Master Level (final level).

Service Lifecycle

With the different certification levels, there is also the service lifecycle of the ITIL. The service lifecycle consists of five stages in service development. The five stages are mentioned below:

  • Strategy Service (SS).
  • Design Service (DS).
  • Transition Service (TS).
  • Operation Service (OS).
  • Continual Service Improvement (CSI).

The service lifecycle is designed in such a way that experts have a complete understanding of the needs, requirements, and also new services.

Different Between Certification Levels

There are some changes made in the new ITIL certification level. The foundation level is the basic level certification, which provides basic knowledge of various ITIL topics and concepts for preparing the advanced level of ITIL certification.

There is no need to pass the exam if you have cleared and qualified for the ITIL 3 certificate. The ITIL certification has not been changed but the certification path has changed, the ITIL certification has an entry-level certification.

Compared to ITIL 3, the new version ITIL 4 has a new structure so students don’t need to earn intermediate credits to qualify for more advanced levels as of in ITIL 3. After completing the certification level there are two options available.

1st is the Managing Professional (MP) and the second is the Strategic Leader (SL). You need to complete all the certification levels mentioned in each stream if you won’t achieve either of the ITIL levels.  After the completion of the intermediate level, you are eligible for Master Certification.

If you have achieved the ITIL 3 certificate and also have 17 or more credits you are eligible for MP certification (Managing Professional). But if you have not earned any credits or didn’t pass the ITIL level, then you have two options.

One of the two options is the ITIL 4 Foundation certification exam and the other is ITIL 3 intermediate certification exam.

ITIL 4 Foundation Exam

This is the foundation exam if you have cleared the ITIL 3 exam but you did not further qualify or didn’t earn any of the credits, in such case you need to complete the ITIL 4 Foundation exam.

ITIL 3 Intermediate Exam

If you have achieved some ITIL credits, you should continue to achieve more credits till you reach 17 credits. After achieving all the credits you are qualified for Managing Professional certificate.

After clearing the exam and obtaining the certificate to qualify for masters certification you will need to pass the Leader Digital and Strategy Module.
