Even if you are not aware of, everyone is surrounded by transparent display technologies. There are four different types of transparent display technologies. These displays include an electronic screen that shows the information on the transparent screen which permits you to see through it. Here you will look at the pros and cons of four types of transparent technology; includes projection head-up displays, LED transparent display, organic light-emitting diode displays, and transparent electroluminescent displays.

Transparent typical projection head-up displays (HUDs):

The oldest transparent display technology is head-up displays. It uses a system of projection to project images on the glass display in front of the viewers. There are three primary components of typical HUD: a combiner, a projector, and a video generation computer.

Pros:

  • While driving airplanes, and cars, the operators receive energetic information within the field of vision and maintain concentration.
  • With HUD the transparent display screen does not need to refocus eyes between the outside the cockpit and information.

Cons:

  • Viewing angles are limited
  • The setups of HUD is complicated as it occupies space and costly also.

LCD transparent displays:

LCD transparent displays are one of the most popular display screens. In the early 21st century, the LCDs set rocketed in popularity. These displays are thinner, lighter, and very easy to scale.

Pros:

  • Better-quality picture due to the use of backlit LEDs instead of the traditional bulb.
  • Extraordinary depth and richness of colors likened to a plasma display screen
  • Multi-functional and versatile capability
  • Inexpensive to produce
  • More energy-efficient up to 20-30% as compared to older bulb lit and plasma displays.

Cons:

  • Black images reproduction is disappointed
  • Due to the liquid crystal filter absorbing light, the brightness is restricted.
  • Suffer from screen blur and lag
  • The view angle is limited.

Organic light-emitting diode displays OLEDs:

This type of transparent display is just a step up from LCDs. OLEDs do not require the backlight use or any filter because of the pixels usage which produces its light.

Pros:

  • The plastic layers are lighter and thinner
  • High level of brightness
  • Less light is absorbed with no color filters in plastic layers which results in a bright picture.
  • Rich in colors
  • Do not suffer screen blur
  • Easy to produce

Cons:

  • OLEDs use organic materials which affect the environment
  • Screen discoloration occurs as it is sensitive to moisture.
  • Loses brightness faster
  • Easily pixels burn
  • Manufacturing is expensive

Transparent electroluminescent displays (TASEL):

These transparent electroluminescent displays comprise a glass panel with a layer of luminescent phosphorous and a circuit board. It is the most durable, transparent, and latest display nowadays. This display is inorganic with solid-state design and unaffected by changes in the environment.

Pros:

  • 85% transparency screen display
  • Inorganic display, unaffected by vibration, humidity, shock, or temperature
  • Laminated in glass
  • If the glass is broken or cracker, work even in that condition
  • Full 360-degree display angle
  • Regardless of temperature, 1ms response time

Cons:

  • Monochromatic images display screen
  • Available in just two display colors: yellow and green
