It can be overwhelming to combat any type of acne. While there are well-known skincare habits and acne treatments that can be effective, you still can improve your skin through home remedies.

Though there is some evidence that acne home remedies might help, there isn’t enough research and science to claim that they will do the trick. These may not necessarily be scientifically proven acne remedies. But if you have these items at home, it could be worth trying them so you can see what works for you. Keep in mind that severe acne requires medical attention. So, first, you should consult your dermatologist before trying any home remedies to avoid infections and other complications.

1. Aspirin

Aspirin contains a lot of salicylic acid, which is often used to treat acne. You can harness the acne-fighting power of salicylic acid by making a zip-zapping paste of crushed aspirin and water. Apply it only to pimples. Don’t spread something like this over your entire face, as it can irritate and dry out your skin.

2. Aloe

Aloe is often used to relieve burns. It might speed up the healing process, combat infection, and even reduce scarring. Scrape the gel from an aloe plant out with a spoon or buy aloe gel from health-food stores, dab it onto blemishes or spots at risk of scarring.

3. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has malic acid and lactic acid that might help exfoliate your skin and dry out acne. Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water and apply to the skin with a cotton ball, making sure to shake well before each use. Apply it only on pimples.

4. Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to possess powerful anti-inflammatory properties that might improve acne. Get the benefits from taking fish oil-containing supplements, or add more salmon, albacore tuna, flaxseeds, and walnuts to your diet. Scientists have found that getting more omega 3 fatty acids might reduce acne breakouts.

5. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil has natural inflammation-fighting effects, which means it might be extremely effective against acne. Mix 12 drops of tea tree oil with 1/2 teaspoon of goldenseal powder to make a paste. Apply it on pimples for 20 minutes twice a day, then rinse it off.

6. Honey

Honey’s antibacterial properties make it a good option for treating acne. Just apply a teaspoon of honey to affected areas, or make a mask by mixing 1/2 cup of honey with a cup of plain oatmeal and leave it on for 30 minutes.

7. Witch hazel

Witch hazel is a plant that acts as an astringent, which means it naturally dries and shrinks blemishes. Pour witch hazel onto a cotton ball and wipe your face each morning and night.

8. Lemons

Since lemon contains acids, it can exfoliate and lighten the skin, while disinfecting wounds and inflamed pimples, as well as reducing the appearance of scars and preventing acne breakouts. On a clean face, dab acne with a cotton ball or cotton swab dipped in lemon juice, then rinse with cool water. You can also mix lemon juice with witch hazel and use it as a spot treatment.

9. Acidic foods

Acidic foods such as citrus fruit juice or vinegar are good options for acne-prone skin. Dab a little onto a cotton ball to help fight acne, then gently wipe the cotton on the affected areas.

10. Green tea

Green tea is an extremely healthy drink that possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that might be beneficial for the skin. To get its benefits, use a cooled cup of green tea as a face wash or lay the bag over the affected area. This can help soothe irritated skin and reduce the inflammation of acne lesions, however, don’t expect it to completely clear your acne.
