Harry Potter is at the Dursleys, where his skinny long-necked aunt is constantly shouting for him to wake up, his big fat uncle is constantly condemning him, and his cousin, Dudley, is continuously punching skinny Harry. All of this, Harry knew, would change someday…or so he thought. He’d be attending a different school than Dudley in the near future.

Until everything changed…

On receiving the letters at the door, Harry finds a letter written in green ink on a weird thick yellow parchment, ‘’To Mr. H Potter…”, with a bizarre seal enclosing the letter H.

Unfortunately, Harry did not have the opportunity to open it because Dudley noticed Harry was holding something. When hundreds of letters arrive in secret, the Dursleys relocate to a cabin on a rock distant from Privet Drive.

When a giant appears and declares that Harry Potter is a wizard and has been offered a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

So there’s Harry with his owl, Hedwig, a gift from Hagrid, and his trunk, wondering how to get to Platform 9-3/4 until he encounters the Weasley family (which, in my opinion, is the best family in the world!) who assist him in getting to the train.

They also encounter bossy little Hermione, who assists Neville in his search for Trevor, his lost toad. Now at school, Harry and Ron are both sorted into Gryffindor, much to their chagrin, and Hermione is also in Gryffindor.

Everything goes swimmingly until they meet a troll, save Hermione Granger, and become friends. The three meets Hagrid, who shows them his dragon, Norbert, whom he names, but Norbert is quickly spirited away by Charlie Weasley’s friend, who promises to look after Norbert. Having a dragon is against the law.

2nd Book Review of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 2

Harry Potter, ten, is an orphan who lives with the Dursleys in the fictional London neighborhood of Little Whinging, Surrey, with his neglectful Aunt Petunia, odious Uncle Vernon, and spoiled cousin Dudley. Harry is scarcely tolerated by the Dursleys, and Dudley taunts him. One day, Harry is surprised to find a note addressed to him in the cabinet beneath the stairs (where he sleeps).

Uncle Vernon, though, takes the letter before he can open it. Letters for Harry continue to arrive every day, but Uncle Vernon tears them all up, and the Dursleys eventually flee to a dismal cottage on a small island in an attempt to avoid the missives.

On Harry’s eleventh birthday, a giant named Hagrid appears and informs him that he is a wizard and has been admitted into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

He also sheds light on Harry’s past, telling him that his parents, a wizard and a witch, were murdered by the wicked wizard Voldemort, and that Harry received the lightning-bolt scar on his forehead during the fateful fight.

Students are assigned to one of four houses upon entrance at school: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. During his exciting first year at Hogwarts, Harry develops good friends with two other members of the house, Ron Weasley, who comes from an old wizarding family, and Hermione Granger, whose parents are Muggles (those who are not magical).

Harry also discovers that he has a foe in Draco Malfoy (Slytherin). Furthermore, Harry’s ability to fly on a broomstick makes him a member of Gryffindor’s Quidditch team.

As a Christmas present, Harry obtains his father’s cloak of invisibility, and while exploring beneath the cloak’s cover, he discovers the Mirror of Erised, in which he can see his parents. Later, Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster, reveals that the mirror reflects the viewer’s truest desire.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione calculate that the treasure hidden beneath the trapdoor is the Philosopher’s Stone, which has the ability to turn metal into gold and give immortality. They subsequently discover that Voldemort has been slaughtering unicorns and consuming their blood in the Forbidden Forest in order to obtain immortality. The group begins to suspect Snape is working with the evil wizard.

They are certain that the Philosopher’s Stone is in jeopardy after learning that Hagrid revealed the secret method for lulling the three-headed dog to a suspicious stranger, whom they think to be either Snape or Voldemort.

The three students use the cloak of invisibility to go on a secret mission to steal the Stone from Voldemort. After overcoming the dog and various protection charms, Harry arrives at the room where the Stone is buried and is surprised to see the eternally apprehensive Professor Quirrell there. Quirrell is unable to extract the Stone from the Mirror of Erised (the final defensive step), forcing Harry to do so.

When standing in front of the mirror, Harry feels the Stone’s weight in his pocket but refuses to tell Quirrell that he has it because he simply wants to safeguard it and not use it for himself. Quirrell removes his hat, revealing Voldemort’s visage on the back of his skull.

Voldemort explains that he has been sharing Quirrell’s body until he can reach the Stone and re-awaken, and Voldemort/Quirrell and Harry fight for ownership of the Stone until Harry blacks out. He awakens in the infirmary to hear that Dumbledore has saved him, that the Stone is to be destroyed, and that Voldemort has escaped.
