The benefits of the Primavera P6 Expert Scheduling Software Tool over the Microsoft Project are mentioned and explained in this article. The two software programs are not intended to be a definitive or comprehensive pro/con analysis treaty.

This is more of a note about the purpose of using Primavera P6 that I have come to appreciate and value. And maybe it’ll be a starting point for all software planning devices to be addressed, but I don’t think this discussion will ever end. Top-Down Scheduling

Primavera P6 Expert is more suitable than Microsoft Project for top-down scheduling. It means that the end item or deliverable that is the entire purpose of the project is considered first in Primavera P6.

Level of Effort (LOE) Activities

The Primavera P6 Professional has LOE operations, which can cover the entire project length. LOE operations are useful for modeling or designing operations, which do not specifically generate an achievable, i.e. Factor WBS. Organizational and project management strategies provide examples of LOE operations. Activity activities in operational and project management lead to indirect costs of the project.

Longest Path.

The Primavera P6 Professional has the largest description of path critical operation that is a major plus. Enhancement of schedules has the largest impact when you shorten tasks along the largest way. The longest way and the essential path coincide several times. In situations where a schedule has activity constraints, the critical activity definition may result in more critical activities that are not necessarily along the long path.

Multiple Float Paths Analysis Feature

Understanding the longest route through the network is certainly good. Primavera P6 Expert has a multiple path concept that begins with the longest path, then measures floating paths, i.e. order of significance, in descending order of length. Paths are thus listed in order from the longest to the smallest, or from the most important to the most.

Steps

The Primavera P6 Professional has a feature called activity measures, which is not included in the Microsoft Project. Two benefits provided by this Primavera P6 steps feature are:

  1. It reduces Gantt chart activity clutter
  2. It gives a discrete way of measuring schedule development.

Budgeted Material Cost

This may seem like this is a minor point, but it really is significant. There is an area for Primavera P6 Professional to view the budgeted material cost; Microsoft Project does not. However, the Microsoft Project does not leave you without hope. Microsoft Project offers the ability to incorporate subroutines for Visual Basic Applications (VBA) that can be designed to separate and show the cost of the budgeted content.
