Ducted air conditioning is a centralized air conditioning system that can condition different rooms with an outdoor unit and a single indoor unit.

Do you want ductwork installation or change the air conditioning?

How does ducted air conditioning work? Ducted air conditioning is characterized by having a network of tubes hidden on a false ceiling that connects the different rooms of the house or premises with the indoor unit of the air conditioning.

The indoor unit, normally located in the bathroom, collects the air from the different rooms through the return ducts to cool it and return it to the rooms through the flow ducts. The return of the air can be done through return ducts or a plenum. It is known as a plenum to the space located between the slab and the false ceiling.

In return, by the plenum, the air enters through the grilles and runs through the hidden space above the false ceiling to the interior appliance. The return by plenum is cheaper and does not require as much space in the false ceiling, but there are energy losses, and the flow collects the dirt from the false ceiling.

The indoor unit is connected via a gas circuit to an outdoor machine located on the façade or roof. The indoor unit collects the air from the rooms and cools it, while the outdoor unit expels the hot air.

There are air conditioners that only provide cold, but the current trend is for them to have an inverter heat pump to provide heat and cold. Contact Airmaxx HVAC Mississauga for all your queries and ductwork installation.

Advantages of ducted air conditioning

There are many types of air conditioning, and that is why the choice when buying one is usually difficult. Although there are factors that make a choice easier, such as having to air-condition several rooms, for which ducted air conditioning is perfect.

  • Centralization: using an indoor unit, you can air-condition several rooms, while with split air conditioning; an indoor unit would have to be placed in each room.
  • Aesthetics: it does not interfere with the home’s design due to its concealment within the false ceiling. In addition, it does not take up space.
  • Maintenance: because it only has one external device and one internal device, its maintenance is much simpler than a system with one device for each room.
  • Noise: it is very quiet since the appliances are not in the rooms but are in the bathroom and outside.

Ducted air conditioning zoning

Ducted air conditioning is a centralized system. That is, a single indoor unit is the one that generates the cold air that is regulated by a thermostat normally located in the living room of the house. This disadvantage is that all rooms have to be at the same temperature and cannot be regulated independently.

To solve this problem, the ducted air conditioning was created with a zoned installation in which each room has a thermostat and motorized grilles. These are closed as soon as the room reaches the desired temperature and are reopened if the temperature changes.

Zoning allows you to independently regulate each room and save energy since it consumes the amount of refrigeration it needs.

How much does the ductwork installation cost?

The price of ductwork installation depends on several factors:

Size of the house: the square meters of the property directly influence the process and cost of the ductwork installation since, depending on the size, more or less long pipes and different diameters are needed.

Pre-installation: for a few years, many new construction homes usually include ductwork installation through ducts. They already come with the ducts, grilles, electrical connection, wiring for the thermostat, and the gas circuit to connect the appliances.

Insulation: the ability of the home to retain heat/cold is very important when installing the air conditioning. If you have poor insulation, you need a more powerful appliance and ducts that allow more airflow.
