Khussas or traditional jutti, whatever you want to call them are a symbol of traditional juttis all over Pakistan. You and I both have seen designer luxury khussas being worn everywhere on weddings. Or we both have seen khussas being advertised on social media or the internet as the symbol of desi tradition.

Nevertheless; Here we will study about the late history of these juttis. Information like how they came into being and where are they most worn and important information regarding the events in which they are worn. So without further ado, Let’s get on with the information.

So according to my research, before partition there was a lot of Chinese influence on the sub continent. So, Because of that influence shoes base were made from the wood. But that technique had practical issues. Since that area was dominated by farmers. Leather was the only material which was favorable to the conditions of the land.

The most early form of this shoe was called majori. This jutti had a different style and shape than the khussa we wear and love today. The very khussas that turns everyone eyes towards us. The very khussas that make everyone heart melt. So if we indulge into the minute detail of that form of the khussa, Which was majori. That shape had a triangular or you can say very pointy shape to it.

Technically speaking, This form was introduced to satisfy the farmers. But still looking at all of the things combined, Leather was an optimal choice. Leather was used because it helped in preventing injuries as well.

So, after that the shoe started to make a royal impression. The edges started to become smooth through time and mughal emperors started wearing them. You can say that the show started to elevate from common man to rulers and kings basically. So after the enhancement of the standard of these juttis.

They began to introduce ornaments to embellish and enhance or you can say to beautify the already existing bewitching beauty of these shoes. Embellishments or enhancements like thread work or pearls or embroidery. Khussas are even hand embroidered now a days.

So we all know that those mughal emperors times were a little extremists time period pieces. If a ruler has worn something, Civilian or common man cannot adopt that fashion sense. It was only and only for the ruler himself. It was like he reserved the fashion for just himself. To enjoy everything in his own comfort zone. Without someone batting an eye on his common fashion.

But khussas were still worn by common men or you can also say, Civilians. Needless to say, they were wearing a more basic or normal or average version of it. Traders or craftsmen or artisans would take orders for the entire families and would finish their orders just in time. Let me mention you that these orders were regular as well. But at that time the barter system was intact so they would trade wheat or hen for khussas.

So now khussas are made with great perfection from one of the best artisans in present time industry. Many people have shaped their own opinions on khussas. They have started to make their own hand made or you can say hand embroidered khussas at home. In their own little bubble of life. This is a great initiative though and I personally do support the idea. For many reasons but mainly because it promotes our culture.
