Despite reports the FBI knew more about the violence that would take place last week, top officials for the bureau said the responsibility for security shortcomings belonged elsewhere.

A TOP OFFICIAL WITHIN the FBI said the bureau adequately warned local authorities of what it knew about the planned violence at the U.S. Capitol last week as supporters of President Donald Trump attempted to disrupt congressional certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in November.

The assertions from Steven D’Antuono, the acting director in charge of the FBI’s Washington field office, follow reports that an internal FBI document warned of “war” and other forms of violence by pro-Trump extremists who were planning to travel to Washington.

“That was a thread on a message board that was being attributable to an individual person,” D’Antuono said of the news, first reported by The Washington Post. “My Washington field office received that information, we briefed that within 40 minutes to our law enforcement partners, federal [and] state.”

He said the information, which reportedly included maps of the Capitol complex tunnels and plans for swarming it, was “ingested” by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which helps link FBI initiatives with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

“That’s the action we took on that, and that’s it,” D’Antuono said.

He made the statement at a press conference alongside acting U.S. Attorney for the District Michael Sherwin – one of dozens of briefings, document releases and public assertions by officials responsible for security in Washington, D.C. since Wednesday. D’Antuono said the FBI was responsible for information leading to the arrest by local D.C. police the day before the protests of Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the far-right-wing group the Proud Boys.

Yet concerns persist about why officials didn’t know more about the intention of those participating in the protests – which Trump backers began organizing at least a month ago, saying it would be “wild” – and why more forces, particularly the D.C. National Guard, weren’t positioned to respond.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has defended in recent days the letter she wrote on Tuesday to Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy – who oversees deployments of the D.C. National Guard, since the capital isn’t a state – and the heads of other federal agencies asking they not deploy federal protective forces as they did during racial justice protests in the city last summer without first coordinating with the D.C. government.

An official in McCarthy’s office issued a statement late Monday denying his office declined requests from U.S. Capitol Police for assistance from the Guard, which the Pentagon must approve since the District is not a state.

D’Antuono said Tuesday that the FBI had received 100,000 pieces of digital media in response to its public call for information about those involved in the violence at the Capitol. The FBI has opened 160 case files – which he described as “just the tip of the iceberg” – and 170 subject files, looking into people who may have committed a variety of crimes.

Sherwin said investigators are taking a “find, fix, charge” approach in which they indict perpetrators for relatively minor infractions, like trespassing, and use that apprehension as a way to expand charges for more significant crimes, including perhaps those responsible for the two pipe bombs placed at the headquarters for the Republican and Democratic national committees nearby the Capitol.

“You will be charged, and you will be found,” Sherwin said.

He later added, “I don’t like this tyranny of labels saying this was ‘an act of domestic terrorism.’ We have plenty of labels … to address this conduct.”

The overall investigation amounts to what Sherwin described as “unprecedented” in scope and scale, adding it “is going to take a lot of work and a lot of effort. It’s not going to be solved overnight. It’s not going to be solved in the coming weeks, and it’s not going to be solved in the coming months.”

Sherwin also said he has organized a team that will specifically build felony cases tied to sedition and conspiracy, which would bring up to 20 years in prison, as well as cases in which weapons and destructive devices were involved.

“The FBI will leave no stone unturned,” D’Antuono said. “The significance of this investigation is not lost on us. It’s a 24-hour a day, full-bore, extensive operation into what happened that day.”

“We are scouring every one for investigation and intelligence leads,” he said. “We continue to ask for more.”

The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for any information regarding the person or people responsible for planting either of the pipe bombs at the political committees’ headquarters.
