Fixed blade knives are knives that typically taper to a sharp point at both ends of the blade, with no cutting edge on the inside of the knife. They are most often used as combat weapons. Many military forces use these types of knives as their standard-issue combat weapon. They are also carried by professionals in law enforcement and rescue operations for utility purposes, including breaking glass or cutting seat belts away from underneath an occupant. Several modern hunting knives include fixed blade designs as well.

Bowie Knife- As An Example Of Fixed Blade Knives

One of the most notable fixed blade knives in history was the Bowie knife. This knife was created by James Black in 1833 with his own personal funds. It has become known throughout history for its powerful cutting ability and became the official knife of the Texas Rangers. A similar design, without any place for a handle to be attached, is still used by Rangers today.

The Bowie knife is based on the ubiquitous German Army Bowie Knife, which dates back to the 1750s. German soldiers carried these knives in their saddlebags and would use them to hack through the locks on enemy gates during the Napoleonic Wars. The Bowie knife (sometimes called a “Hack-Knife ”, or “Hack-zawehr”) was standard issue to all German infantry and cavalry units. An early English improvement of the knife was developed by John Williams during his tenure as a captain in the British Army, and copied by his successor. This design comprised an enlarged finger guard to protect the finger, which was prone to injury when using the knife for cutting, and a short point. The blade was also strengthened by making it thicker. The knife was made shorter than the German original. By 1780, all infantrymen in English service were carrying this improved pattern of the German Army Bowie Knife.

Knives With Fixed Blades: Their Specifications

Fixed blade knives are a type of knife with a single cutting edge from the tip of the blade to the butt, which typically has a tang that extends into or through the handle. The last edge or “blade” is sometimes ground so that it cannot be sharpened and does not have a cutting edge. These knives are commonly used for hunting, camping, and fishing. A fixed-blade knife has high resistance to being accidentally dropped because of its design and can be clipped onto a pocket or belt for easy carrying.

A fixed blade knife is a knife with a blade which does not fold into the handle. A fixed blade has many uses from cutting food to fighting or survival situations. It can also be stored easily as it does not have to be folded up. It is more convenient as it does not have to be opened and closed as often as a folding knife would. However, this means that the handle of a fixed blade must be long enough to accommodate the blade and allow for proper grip and holding of the knife.

Using A Fixed Blade Knife Has Its Advantages

The best part about these knives is that they’re not too heavy. They’re heavy enough to get the job done, but they are very easy to carry around. Their sturdy design (with no moving parts) also means they’re perfect for heavy duty work like wood-splitting or nailing.

Fixed blade knives offer many advantages over their folding counterparts. The most obvious of these is that they don’t fold, instead maintaining a solid, sturdy construction. Fixed blades are much stronger than folding knives and generally come with locking mechanisms to keep the blade safely in place until it’s released.

Another advantage of a fixed blade knife is that it is usually stronger than a folder. A vital part of a folding knife is the pivot. This can be quite weak on some folding knives, especially if there are many components in the hinge area. A sturdy locking mechanism or lock-back mechanism can go a long way, but ultimately these are not as strong as a full tang. A full tang means that the metal of the knife runs all the way through to form two separate pieces which sandwich the handle material between them. This not only gives the blade more rigidity but also safer use.

Great For Carrying!

Fixed blade knives are great for carrying into the field, school, or on vacation because they have a one-piece tang that allows them to be easily fixed. As they are easy to use and easy to hide, you can move with them anywhere.
