Many heavy drinkers and binge drinkers make the decision to begin drinking responsibly. However, with so much information regarding the risks of alcohol available, it can be difficult to know where to begin. In a few easy steps, you can learn how to drink responsibly.

Establish Your Drinking Goal

While it’s a good idea to consider cutting back on your alcohol consumption, be sure you’re a good candidate for restricted drinking. Some people should not drink at all, particularly if they have a history of addiction issues or have a close family who has or has had an addiction or mental health issues.

If you recognize you need to stop drinking entirely, speak with your doctor about receiving help stopping and staying clean. It may not be safe to quit cold turkey depending on how much you’ve been drinking recently, and your doctor can prescribe medicines to make it safer and help you manage alcohol withdrawal. Consider your objective and write it down whether you are a suitable candidate for restricted drinking.

Assess Your Alcohol Intake

Keep a one-week drinking journal. The most basic drinking diaries just keep track of how much you drink each day, but the more you can keep track of, the more you will understand and regulate your own drinking tendencies.

Write down how many drinks you drank, where you were when you drank, and with whom every evening (or the next morning if you forgot). Also, write down any bad consequences or circumstances that occurred that you would wish to avoid in the future, such as “I got into an argument with Peter after my third beer.” This stage will give you an excellent sense of when, when, and with whom you tend to drink excessively or problematically.

Calculate Your Safe Limit

Your safe alcohol limit is the quantity of alcohol you can drink in a single drinking session depending on your blood alcohol content. It is determined by a number of characteristics, including your gender, weight, and the rate at which you consume alcohol. Once you’ve determined out how many drinks you can have, write it down along with the amount of time you’ll be drinking.

Purchase Small Amounts

The easiest way to ruin your attempt to drink sensibly is to stock up on wine, beer, and liquor. Follow these guidelines when drinking at home:

  • On the day you plan to drink it, but only the amount of alcoholic beverage you determined in step 3.
  • Purchase individual cans or single serving or half-size bottles of wine if necessary.
  • Purchase the same amount of wine or beer that is alcohol-free or low-alcohol. If you know you’ll want more beverages but not more booze, prepare ahead of time.

Plan Your Journey Home

Even if you drink responsibly, you will be intoxicated and should not drive. Pre-book a cab or arrange for a sober driver to take you home. If that’s too expensive, schedule your return bus ride so you know when to depart while the buses are still operating. You should leave your automobile at home so that you are not tempted to utilize it. To get to your drinking gathering, get a ride or take the bus.

Pace Yourself

Only drink the amount stated in step 3 and at the set rate. Drink water or alcohol-free or low-alcohol beverages in between if you wish to drink more.

Watch for Peer Pressure

Examine the drinking journal you made in step 2. If there are any people that push you to drink excessively, stay away from them for the first month or two as you adjust to your new drinking pattern. Start finding new friends who don’t drink as much if you’re constantly surrounded by peer pressure to do so.
