Blackout curtains are increasingly present on the windows and doors of our homes. They are an accessible, simple but effective solution to limit the brightness in a room. Like classic curtains, they are exposed to dust and possible stains. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain them regularly to take care of their appearance and decoration.

How to wash a blackout curtain?

Washing is still the primary maintenance used for blackout curtains. They are usually more robust than standard curtains because they are thicker and made with a more substantial fabric. Polyester is the most widely used type of fabric. This material has the advantage of withstanding humidity very well. Just wash the curtain by hand, or machine, if the label indicates it. The ordinary detergent will be enough to remove dust spots. Feel free to scrub with a brush to remove embedded stains, or you can also use a simple damp cloth to remove small bumps on the surface. On the other hand, avoid using bleach as it tends to distort colors. Drying can be done naturally or at a low temperature.

Stains that resist

Use a damp cloth. You won’t need to wash the entire blackout curtain if it only has a few minor stains. To clean, lift the curtain off the rod and place it on a flat surface. Gently wipe the stained area with a cloth dampened in warm soapy water. The water temperature should not exceed 30 ° C. If stains persist, use detergent, and a clothes brush. After this, you have to let it dry in the air. Be careful, do not use bleach to clean stains, even if they are difficult to remove.

Can we iron a blackout curtain?

Polyester blackout curtains can be ironed to leave them with that smooth, smooth appearance. Some models even allow steam irons to remove wrinkles formed during washing effectively. If other fabrics (cotton, silk, linen ) are present as an internal or external layer in the blackout curtain, read the manual carefully to see the ironing conditions.
