It’s been nearly two decades since the award-winning movie Spirited Away was released, and yet fans are still hoping for a sequel to be produced soon.

The animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli was a phenomenal success. It grossed $ 347.7 million worldwide and remains the first and only non-English hand-drawn animated film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

To this day, Spirited Away events continue to be appreciated and fans around the world continue to show their active support for the film on internet forums and social media platforms. Will there be Spirited Away 2 in the future?

There have been multiple rumors around the internet regarding a possible Spirited Away sequel and we are here to finally set the record straight.

Earlier this year, Studio Ghibli announced that Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement for him and is working on his next great and fantastic story.

Unfortunately, this is not the sequel to Spirited Away, but a completely different feature film, Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka (How do you live?).

The heartbreaking truth is that Studio Ghibli is not known for following up no matter how successful their movie is. Unlike other studios, Studio Ghibli places the highest importance on your credibility and respect for its masterpieces. They refuse to turn their movies into cash cows, which is really commendable but a bit sad, especially when we wanted to see Chihiro and Haku fulfill their promise and meet again. There are also no official reports saying a sequel is in the works.
