There are temples in India and in Tamil Nadu that are considered sacred for different things. For example, some temples are known for curing the ill ones, while some bless you in your career. Similarly, there is a temple that is particularly important for couples getting married. Thousands of marriages happen in Vadapalani Murugan Temple since in South India, Lord Muruga holds a lot of significance to bring marital happiness between two people.

This is also the most famous temple of Muruga as here the deity stands wearing footwear, and his left foot is one step ahead. The creation of the idol makes it significant and also attracts thousands of devotees to see such as idol.

Temple History

The legend is associated with a staunch devotee of Muruga, who once was caught by chronic disease. It is said that just like God is the creator of humans and humans are the worshippers of God, Devils are the creator of diseases. However, by praying to God and offering him pujas, one can get rid of their ailments.

Once, the devotee of Lord Muruga developed an ailment that was not going away and was only getting worse. Annasamy Naicker was the devotee who visited Muruga’s various temples to cure his disease. There was a Sadhu who advised Annasamy to worship Muruga in the house instead of visiting his temples.

Annasamy did the same; he painted a picture of Lord Murugan and started worshipping the Lord in his house. Gradually by the blessings of Muruga, the person started to heal, and on one fine day, he was completely liberated from the disease. To show his immense gratitude toward the Lord, Annasamy offered his tongue to Lord Muruga. The devotee didn’t stop there; after getting cured, he developed even more affection toward God, and he never stopped worshipping him.

This is one thing that we all human beings should learn from the staunch devotees of God. We should pray to God and offer him pujas even after our wishes come true. We should not forget God when we are in joy, and God will always keep his blessings on us.

Once Annasamy went to visit the deity of Dhandayuthapani, and while descending from there, he saw a beautiful picture of Palaniandastavan. It was so mesmerizing that he brought the picture home.

Annasami then started hearing peoples’ problems with Lord Murugan’s picture. His words were known as “Arul Vaaku” by the people of the place. Rathinasamy Chettiyar living beside Annasamy’s house, helped to develop a temple which is now known as Vadapalani Temple.

Analysis of Temple

Rathinasamy Chetiyar started the building of the temple in 1865. There are various deities that reside in the temple, such as Vinayagar, Chokannathar (Shiva), and Meenakshi. The temple Vadapalani Murugan holds a similar significance as Palani Murugan; both have the same significance, and the devotees can get blessings from either.

As the Chettiyar and Naickar both built the temple together, the architecture shows that no caste or creed is needed for spirituality; only the heart should be pure and devotional.

The temple is not only attended by those who wish to get married by the blessings of Muruga, but people who want to conceive also tie the cradle in the tree with their wish. There is one raja gopuram in the temple holding mesmerizing carvings; there is 108 Bharatnatyam dance in the eastern tower of the temple.
