The obligation starts on November 15th

With the arrival of cold weather, it is time for all road users to think about changing tires. Starting from October 15th it is possible to fit winter tires which become mandatory starting from November 15th and until April 15th for some roads where the Highway Code requires transit only with thermal tires.

More and more users are choosing 4-season tires

From a survey by the European Association of Tire and Rubber Products Manufacturers (ETRMA), the 4-season model is the one that earns the most sales shares in Europe in the third quarter of 2021: + 20% on the same period of 2020, while the share of winter tires remained stable.

A sign that more and more people are turning to 4-season tires, to avoid the change. From the point of view of the legislation no problem: they are considered comparable to thermal rubbers and therefore follow the law. We remind you that in any case you can keep the same tires but with the obligation of chains on board.

This leads us to consider the issue of performance. For those who live in cold places and with frequent snowfalls, winter tires are recommended over 4-season tires. When spring arrives, it is not mandatory to go back to summer tires but it is strongly recommended because winter tires wear out much more in the heat, thus leading to additional wear and costs.

With tire change safety and savings

Having suitable tires and a valid third-party liability insurance policy are good rules to follow, not only to avoid fines but above all for safety. Various studies have calculated an increase in grip of over 27% of winter tires compared to traditional ones. One last indication that perhaps many people miss: the obligation of winter tires for the roads indicated by the code applies to all motor vehicles in circulation, including two or three-wheeled vehicles.
